Splinterlands - Metamask Wallet Security

Over the past few days I have been hearing stories about people's assets being storied on a Metamask wallet had their assets stolen. Since Splinterlands bridges into Binance's BSC it maybe a good idea to go over a few items to safe guard your Metamask wallet.

First off those who are unaware Splinterlands has links to bridge several different crypto platforms. One of them is BSC which is short for Binance Smart Chain.

With that in mind we now look at most likely reasons why a Metamask Wallet can get hacked and what are ways to prevent and diagnose if our wallet indeed is hacked?

Phishy Links!!!

Often when going to a crypto site that requires my Metamask wallet I don't second think if the link is actually a scammer site. It maybe because I am in a rush searching for the next big crypto project or simply I did not do enough due diligence.

One of the ways I try to avoid websites that appears to be scams is to go on the links through coinmarketcap.com. Over on coinmarketcap I would be certain that the website of interest is legit.

Other times searching on google or duckduckgo I may notice the top results from the search has a high potential of being scam sites. Scammers who spend enough $$$ on Google can get their site links all the way to the top of the search but it is not necessarily safe.

If possible always go to a reputable crypto website to find the link to the crypto project I am interested in to limit accidentally clicking on scam site links.

Metamask Hot Wallet

For those who are not aware a crypto hot wallet is one where the crypto is linked to. Therefore if a hacker were supposedly able to get into my Metamask wallet they can liquidate the funds in the wallet instantly. The way around this is to purchase a Cold Wallet which basically can store my crypto onto a usb drive that is away from the internet at all times until it is required to deposit/withdraw.

Figure Out If My Metamask Wallet has been Compromised

Lets just say you may think your Metamask wallet has been compromised and wanted to check if a hacker has access to it and one day potentially rug pull your assets through Metamask. There are a few sites to check if your wallet indeed got hacked.

https://etherscan.io/tokenapprovalchecker

Running a scan of your wallet address to confirm it is safe would result into something similar to below.

Another website to determine if your Metamask wallet has been compromised is https://debank.com/profile

You must connect your wallet to debank and under profile there is a tab "Approval".

In this tab it will list your most recent approvals for access to your Metamask Wallet. Sample picture above shows no approval which means no other person should have access to my Metamask wallet at the time I had access it.

Conclusions

Sometimes we may be in a rush to do a transaction and neglect certain safety measures in protecting our crypto wallets. The wallets that are convenient to use often will have security holes in them since it is easy to access funds. As more chains are created and potentially tied to Splinterlands' platform it maybe wise to go over the operations of the wallet in case we may use it in the future.

In the example of Metamask although it is widely use it is also is not 100% secured. Don't let your hard earn work and money go to waste just by having someone rug pull by taking away your assets immediately. There are wallet scans to confirm if the wallet has "approval" besides the actual owner of the wallet. Not having any additional approval will mean only owner has access to the wallet.
