Strategy Corner #36 - Wands Out Ruleset - Immortalis is the only choice again ? :)

Heya Splinterlanders :)

Definitely, we are in the hardest time for Splinterlands ecosystem since the last bull run. I really don't know how it was before :). Can we survive it? I hope so :). I had a lot of hopes about land release, I mentioned it a few times already, but now my optimism has faded a bit. We have been waiting for new tournaments for more than a week already, it seems a quite simple task, but even that it's just too difficult for the current truncated development team. So we just only need to wait, and be patient, but how long more?
So let's focus more on the mundane, today's ruleset is Wands out.

Description:

Only units with magic attacks may be used.

Use Phase, Void, Void Armor, and Magic Reflect to counter magic attacks.

Firstly, the description of the ruleset in the game is not perfect, sometimes you get just general information which does not give you all the information you need. The best way to read the full description as above from the game documentation at least once. You can check all here.

I seriously encourage you guys to check this site, all related links are above, even more advanced players could find something interesting there.

Wands Out is one of the newest rulesets, it limits quite drastically your arsenal. Only monsters with magic damage could be used, BUT and it is quite important BUT, you can also double-type damage monsters, for example, Quora. And this is one thing I consider during team selection. It's quite obvious that you need to get as much magic protection as you can. Above in the ruleset description, you can find some very useful abilities. One of the best option (as always) is Immortalis the King, who guarantee every monster void abilities. That's why a different type of damage is so important. Sometimes with magic damage reduction (silence) you just cannot do any magic damage at all. Another quite interesting choice is Grandmaster Rathe, maybe not so strong as before (because of Immo :) ), but still a solid choice. So let's see the battle and talk more about it :).

Today's battle is a Gold Wild Ladder match where opponents used higher level monsters than me. And you probably expect Immortalis :), but this time Earth Splinter wasn't available, so this is a perfect example of what could be an alternative setup.

image.png

The opponent's summoner choice is quite interesting, definitely, something you could not expect :). But the rest of the team is quite solid: Void dragon with Phase and Void ability is so strong tank for this ruleset. Additionally resurrect, armor protection against earthquake ruleset, everything seems very decent.
My plan is simply, Iziar plus triage, with additional armor repair and Void Armor from Grandmaster Rathe. Was it enough? Let's check:

image.png

Round 2, after earthquake damage. So far no casualties, both players got some armor protection, but now all the monsters are much more vulnerable.

image.png

Round 3, still no casualties :), Iziar is so strong with reducing magic damage and healing from Spirit Hoarder. Unfortunately, the next turn will be massacre :)

image.png

Round 4, a lot of things happened, both players lost almost half of the team, but both got Resurrect ability. We came back with Spirit Hoarder which is good, but unfortunately opponent got back Venari Wavesmith, which got him additional armor. Wrrrr.

image.png

Round 5, Iziar was taking a lot of damage, but still standing :). No casualties, but again next round could be crucial.

image.png

Round 6, we finally lost Iziar, but our Adelade Brightwing is untouched, mostly because of Armor repair skill. It seems so close to ending.

image.png

Final Blow - Round 7 - wow, Adelade definitely MVP here, that armor repair just was enough to survive the whole fight. Spirit Hoarder couldn't do any more damage here, but that triage was very useful from the beginning of the battle.

image.png

It is not the first time we were able to win versus higher-level cards. Maybe not all the cards were on the max gold level but the overall opponent team was strong. After I saw the resurrection of Wavesmith, I thought that was the end for us :).
This time both me and the opponent haven't got any good option to use monsters with additional different types of damage. Probably the earthquake ruleset was a higher priority to try to get more protection. And of course, Iziar was an excellent choice, we talked already about that triage taunt combo. Let's check some more choices we made in the Core Team section.

image.png

IZIAR, it's hard for me to decide if Iziar or Adalade was MVP for today's battle. It's not the first time to seen Iziar in the Core Team section, but I think for Wands Out ruleset outside the Earth team this monster is a staple. And of course, if there is enough mana to fit any triage monster it becomes just insane :). For the lower mana match, I like to play him in the first position. I cannot even imagine Gold and higher leagues when he gets Martyr ability.

image.png

GRANDMASTER RATHE was one of my favourite summoner. "Was", because Immortalis just changed the rules of the game :). Right now Rathe is still a solid choice, but usually, if the Earth splinter is not available. A;; his abilities are very useful, you know that I love armor and I think there is never too much armor. Void Armor is the perfect skill for any Magic team battle, so exactly what we need in Wands Out ruleset. Maybe sometimes I need to consider Rathe oftener.

image.png

ADELADE BRIGHTWING, I really like that card, even in the non-only magic ruleset. I think I should put here the max level version :), there is almost no place for more abilities: flying, armor repair, resurrect, immunity, and swiftness. But even on the silver level, Adalade is so useful, and as you can see in today's battle sometimes it is just a one-man army who could survive a lot. Even that very low speed is not a big deal, definitely one of the best card for Wands Out ruleset.

A few articles ago, I was wondering what could be the topics of the new series after Battle Mage Secrets. I think this uneasy period could be a good opportunity for some changes, even around the blogging sphere. For sure there are still more rulesets to discuss, but it would be better to filter out those boring ones (like Odd Ones etc, but unfortunately we already have some of them :) ) Do you have any ideas about what could be the next focus point?

I hope you like this kind of battle and strategy presentation. More strategy analysis, discussion, and prediction games you can find on my Wednesday Splinterlands.tv stream. You can check the schedule here

If you have any comments, please do not hesitate. Do you think I could improve anything just tell me :)

We continue our game from the previous week, today new battle, new card to win :).

I come up with some ideas, I hope you will like them and participate. Every week I will publish one battle, and your goal is to point out the first victim of the battle and who will be the winner. This game is exactly the same as my prediction game which I run on my Wednesday Splinterlands.tv stream. I know that not everyone can attend the stream, so I hope you will still have fun in that way. More about the rules can be read here.

Among all participants who get the correct answer, I will randomly (probably on my Wednesday stream) choose one winner.

The prize of the blog prediction game for the lucky winner will be the epic card:

Here we got the battle:

image.png

Game instruction:
Try to point out which monster will die first on the battlefield and who wins the battle

  • t - top player
  • b - bottom player
  • number - order counting from the first position

Examples:
t2b = monster on the second position of top player dies first, the bottom player wins
b6t = monster on the sixth position of bottom player dies first, the top player wins
t3t = monster on the third position of top player dies first, the top player wins

Immortalis is the king, Rathe can maybe sit next to him. 😃
