Strategy Corner #48 - Back to Basics Ruleset - Boring, hated, or what ?

Hiya Splinterlanders :)

Hmm, we have another not-so-interesting ruleset for today, and from my knowledge the most hated :). I may be not the biggest fan of it, but still, I think depending on another ruleset of the battle, it could create some interesting matches. Remember, in the dynamic world of Splinterlands, strategic adaptability is key to success. Let's quickly check the ruleset definition and then jump to the battle, where I try to present in practice what I mean by adaptability.

Description:

Units lose all abilities.

Summoner effects are still active.

Firstly, the description of the ruleset in the game is not perfect, sometimes you get just general information which does not give you all the information you need. The best way to read the full description as above from the game documentation at least once. You can check all here.

I seriously encourage you guys to check this site, even more advanced players could find something interesting there.

As it was mentioned in official documentation, summoner effects are still active, and now because monsters don't have any abilities you have to rely on summoner powers. I think Yodin Zaku is the best summoner for this ruleset. Unfortunately, he is quite expensive, even for rent. I rarely use it, but there are a few other options depending on the mana available. One of the best ones, especially for lower mana matches. An additional shield with Divine shield ability which she provides could change drastically the balance of the fight.
Usually magic is the obvious choice for this matchup, that's why I think Immortalis (always the king) is one of the better choices as well. As always I could talk and talk about other possibilities, but let's jump to the battle and see what was my choice there.
Let's check our battle:

Today's battle is a Wild Gold Ladder match, where as always I'm facing higher level team :). Let's see if I could be victorious this time :)

image.png

My idea was to utilize Conqueror Jacek's feature - speed and piercing with the combination of Super Sneak Ruleset. The plan seemed quite solid, I put high damage, low defense units in the middle, front, and back more solid defense.
The opponent went with a quite similar strategy but chose different units. His backline is not so defense-heavy. Let's see how it ends.

image.png

Round 2, both of us lost one unit, I was quite stronger, so additionally, we were able to almost kill another one. We will try to analyze the unit's order in the section below.

image.png

Round 3, was great, we got more firepower and speed advance, 2 casualties on the opponent's side, and we lost none.

image.png

Round 4, almost the copy of round 3, we still got advancement, we didn't lose any units and the opponent's firepower was so limited already.

image.png

Round 5, was the enemy round, we finally lost 2 units, which stood the whole 2 rounds and did a lot of damage :). I hope the speed could save us on the next round

Final Blow - Round 6 - In Round 5 we were close to getting the final hit, but it was inevitable at that point. Let's discuss both strategy and potential mistakes.

For sure that wasn't a typical Back to Basics battle, but I think the most important skill in Splinterlands is to adapt your strategy for the exact ruleset in the battle. Super Sneak ruleset is a great addition to Back to Basics, giving us more options with melee units. Both players used them to the fullest, focusing on melee monsters and the best summoner in that situation - Jacek. Even with a higher-level monster, my opponent made some mistakes with low-defense units at the back. His idea relied on speed but without any abilities that give more chances to avoid attack, it wasnt the best choice. And our monster still was faster, and as you should know already speed is everything in Splinterlands :).

FORGOTTEN ONE, is just solid card. One of the best for the Noxious Fume ruleset, but we are not talking about it today. It has solid stats, four damage, and nice defense. The only problem could be quite low speed, but it could be fixed with some speed boost from other sources. And of course, you cannot forget about Retaliate skill, which could be crucial with the Super Sneak ruleset, unfortunately in our today's battle we got no such luck to use it often.

image.png

SAND WORM was a staple card in the older format, when there was no division between formats, especially in higher league where Worm got piercing ability. Offensive stats are very good, six damage is so great, but lacking speed could be an issue. That's why the help of Jacek with piercing and speed boost is so important here. Of course, Sand Worm is quite fragile, so it is a good idea to have some protected positions for it. In Back to Basics, ruleset is not so difficult :).

image.png

EXPLODING RATS, I hesitate about which card should be here, Conqueror Jacek was so important in this battle, but we talked about him many times. So I decided to stick to Rats, a card that could be so handy with specific circumstances. One of them is today's ruleset combination, where Super Sneak and Back to Basics guarantee that Rats could be in the middle of the team, in safe positions. And with so much speed and damage is the perfect weapon to kill the enemy units fast.

Our today's article and battle were for sure not typical, but I really want to focus your attention on details and how they can change the perspective of the battle. Back to basics, the ruleset seems so simple, but even without any other variable you still have plenty of choices that could surprise your opponent. For sure if you have access to very powerful cards like Lorne or Yodin, sometimes it's enough to win the battle on their own. Sometimes you need to find a way to beat them, and if you are successful, you feel the satisfaction :).

We continue our game from the previous week, today new battle, new card to win :).

I come up with some ideas, I hope you will like them and participate. Every week I will publish one battle, and your goal is to point out the first victim of the battle and who will be the winner. This game is exactly the same as my prediction game which I run on my Wednesday Splinterlands.tv stream. I know that not everyone can attend the stream, so I hope you will still have fun in that way. More about the rules can be read here.

Among all participants who get the correct answer, I will randomly (probably on my Wednesday stream) choose one winner.

The prize of the blog prediction game for the lucky winner will be the epic card:

Here we got the battle:

Game instruction:
Try to point out which monster will die first on the battlefield and who wins the battle

  • t - top player
  • b - bottom player
  • number - order counting from the first position

Examples:
t2b = monster on the second position of top player dies first, the bottom player wins
b6t = monster on the sixth position of bottom player dies first, the top player wins
t3t = monster on the third position of top player dies first, the top player wins
