Play to Earn crypto games may not be a concept you're familiar with if you're new to crypto; however, the idea is important and quite beneficial to a new crypto investor. This article will cover the following areas:

  1. Definition of play to earn crypto games
  2. Discuss common misconceptions about the meaning of play to earn crypto games
  3. Demonstrate an example of a play to earn game

Definition of Play to Earn Crypto Games

The definition of a play to earn crypto game originated from an idea that crypto could be earned through gaming rather than mining, like you see with the bitcoin. Crypto games give you the opportunity to play while investing. This approach to crypto means you're earning your investment as you proceed in the game. The original understanding of the term "play to earn" resided in you play which means you earn crypto. No investment is required for you to play the game; however, the term is loosely used; which leads to our next area of discussion: misconceptions about play to earn crypto games.

Common Misconceptions about Play to Earn Crypto Games

You'll want to be careful about the fine print of play to earn crypto games. Some games claim to be play to earn; however, you need a massive investment in order to actually earn crypto. The true idea behind play to earn games was you needed little to no investment, and you gained in your investments by playing the game. What you CAN be assured of when you see the term "play to earn" used, is that you are playing a game which will in some form earn you crypto.

What you must be wary of is exactly HOW MUCH investment is required before you actually start earning or how much you earn by playing the game. Some games require such a massive initial investment to actually start playing the game that a person might wonder if a bitcoin option is easier since it requires little effort to buy and your investment just "rests" as the market does the work. So, do not be fooled by the concept that you are playing for free to earn crypto. Some games will let you play for free, but many will not; therefore, be sure you've done your research on whether or not the game is truly a play to earn game.

An Example of A Play to Earn Game

One example of a play to earn game would be the successful crypto game, Splinterlands. As I mentioned in a previous post you can click here to read, Splinterlands allows the player to try the game for free (for an unlimited amount of time), and when you want to invest, you have the ability to buy crypto with a few clicks. The play to earn aspect of Splinterlands comes occurs as you win battles played using NFTs. You have the ability to earn crypto while playing the game, and if you lose the battle, you do not lose crypto currency.

I think you are right that a lot of p2e games have huge startup costs. Splinterlands is just $10, but if you want to compete in leagues where you can really earn (silver+) you need to probably invest a bit or be very patient

Thank you, Rob. Wonderful observation. In comparison to other play to earn games, it seems Splinterlands has a very affordable entry point. Have you played long?
