Beginners Guide To Splinterlands - Part 1 - Why Play?
Over the next few weeks I will be creating a beginner series to help new players get started in this ever adapting game and look at some different strategies that could be followed with the current dynamics in the game from my perspective.
When I first saw Splinterlands, I had no idea about what it was and how it worked. It was a very daunting thing. It took me a while of lurking on some streams, watching what was happening, before I took any action myself to even start playing.
Before Splinterlands, except Rising Star, I had not really played any online card games, let alone web3 games with NFTs. I am really glad that I overcame this mental block and decided to start the journey to learn the game.
It may seem like a complex game to start playing, but that is just because the game has so much depth to it. It is not just a game where you click once or twice a day like some of the more basic play2earn games. There are quite a few things to learn and as you develop as a player, this also gets more advanced and fun too.
Why play?
The first reason I would say is that it is fun. Playing an online card game with many other people can be fun and challenging. Building up your own NFT collection and earning some crypto can also be rewarding.
It also introduced me to the concept of buying, renting and trading NFTs that now doing these things are second nature to me. Splinterlands assets can also be transferred across different blockchains easily too. Once you start owning your own in-game assets, playing web2 games just isn't the same.
Some of the benefits of playing Splinterlands are that you learn to play a tried and tested fully functioning game that is not in beta, alpha, building up a community or still working out the tokenomics.
The Splinterlands team has a proven track record and everything is already there, a great working game that you can play straight away. It has a lot of depth, a really friendly community and some of the best tokenomics of any play2own game. Splinterlands really is the gold standard that other game developers try to emulate.
Costs
One of the first questions many people ask are, what does it cost? The answer to that is that you can play at any budget. Some people like the challenge of Free2Play and grinding your way to earning some crypto, others like to invest a little and buy key assets and others may be whales and want to participate in the Splinterlands economy. Whatever your wallet size, there is a place for you.
If you want to play first without investing anything, this is possible as there are starter cards which you can use and start playing. The only thing to note is that you would not earn any crypto (SPS token) from your battles. This however could be a good option if you want to practice and play a little before investing any of your hard earned into the game.
To play AND earn crypto, you would need to buy a $10 spellbook. This will allow you to earn the in game crypto token called Splintershards or SPS for short. You can earn the token each day in three ways. The first is for each battle you win, the second is by completing daily focus quests and then at the end of a season you win a number of chests based on your performance.
How much do you earn?
This is probably the second most asked question. I do a season wrap up with my season results and earnings, so you can feel free to check these out. I find the daily rewards and earnings good in the gold league, but when you start and play in the bronze and silver leagues, the crypto earnings will be very small. But we all started there and it should be expected when you are a new player and learning something new.
I don't want to give you false expectations that there are lots of easy crypto to be earnt. It is worth to play and you can earn, but the earnings would be very low to begin with. However, you also earn something called reward cards, these are soulbound cards that cannot be sold at the moment, but you may be able to in the future.
This is a great incentive to play because you then also have a way to build up your deck for free, just by playing and then later, if you want you could have some game assets to trade if you mint them into an NFT.
As well as playing the regular games, you can also join guilds and earn extra SPS this way or participate in some of the regular tournaments where you can win SPS too! There are tournaments for all level of players.
Not only that, there are other tokenomic ways to earn in the Splinterlands eco-system. Things such as buying and selling cards, renting cards, staking and using the liquidity pools.
In the community you can also participate in the challenges on social media and earn some extra crypto. There are many different ways to play and earn.

Gotta be honest. I just skimmed over this one since I have been active in Splinterlands since the kick starter. It's been a great game. Anything that can draw more users in is a good thing.
Thanks, I think it is the best game for new players to join, if anything, so that they know how a good web3 game is working.
Yes, it definitely shines above the rest right now.
Yay! 🤗

I think I have asked to all the question from you😅. To be honest I was waiting for such kind of article which is helpful to guide a newbie in spinterlands.
I have another question. Should I create a account just for testing purposes and understand it? After that I will create a new account with some investment. Which one is better?
😅 That could well be.
You can sign in with your hive username and use this account for testing and when you want to invest, you can invest to the same account. It won't do any damage to stay with the 1 account for both purposes.
Thank you for giving me a suggestion. I will create an account and I will try to understand it.
Good luck 👍
I will contact you whenever I face difficulties. I hope you won't mind.
Anytime!
In reality, the daunting nature of splinterlands is why I avoided it for such a long time, but, I learned how to play eventually and it's been a beautiful experience, although the cost is something I can't remember anymore, because the more you go, the more you lose count of how much it costs to play.
Good to hear it has been a great experience, that is the same for me. With these type of games, you could keep buying new things all the time to keep up with the latest trends. I too have lost count of how much I have invested until now.
I want to join splinter land with your referral link but as i open the link i see this kind of interface

Thanks, I will need to check that out. My referral link is here:
