Splinterlands Battle Mage - Back to Basics

Hello Splinterfans!

This week we have the new Battle Mage Secrets weekly challenge with the ruleset Back to Basics.

When I see the game ruleset back to basics, I am first checking if the ruleset Lost Legendaries is also there as this can really throw a spanner in the works for choosing your line up.

I think the goto attack for back to basics is usually a magic attack as you can still give your monsters a good attacking buff despite the monsters losing their abilities.

With that in mind, instead of going also for a magic attack, I like to go for a counter to this obvious attack. A first choice here could be the awesome Bortus who I do not have at the moment or the great new summoner Immortalis.

Both of these summoners can counter a strong magic attack, but is it enough for those heavy-hitting magic monsters?

Let's find out today. On to this week's battle.

My Team

This is a high mana battle and I will need some big hitters for this battle. You can see I have no less than three legendaries included.

ROUND 1 - Grund vs. Tusk the Wilde

My thoughts were to put up some high mana monsters at the front of attack to give my other monsters more time to deal more magic attack. If my opponent tried to counter my magic attack, I could at least have some strong melee attack to attack their tank.

It seems my opponent was thinking the same with a high-health monster as tank before the big guns come out later. With back to basics ruleset, both our line-ups are severely weakened.. who will win?

As expected in the first round, Grund is still standing with his void ability from immortalis. Although he has taken some damage from the very stron magic attack monsters.

ROUND 2

Again the powerful legendary Runemancer Florre features in my lineup. Although her ranged attack is weakened, she still has a good magic attack and high health score.

In the second round, she disposes of the very strong Agor Longtail's shield with the newly inherited shatter ability that she has gained from Immortalis.

ROUND 3

In round 3, both sides deal some heavy punches and Void Dragon and Mycelic Slipspawn both fall.

Round 4 & 5

image.png

In round 4 and 5, the mighty Chaos Dragon and Kron the Undying face off. The both deal some heavy punches. Runemancer Florre shatters the shield of the Chaos Dragon, but he still manages to give out some heavy magic attack to Kron.

Chaos Dragon is the first to fall, Kron the Undying is severly weakend and falls next. With his low health score, Djinn Apprentice falls quickly afterward, leaving just Djinn Inferni to face off against a still very strong Runemancer Florre with lots of backup still behind her.

Round 6

As you would expect, it was over very quickly in round 6. My opponent would have been better to use the dragon summoner Delwyn Dragonscale, but that wouldn't be possible in the modern league 😉.

Summary:

With the back to basics ruleset, you have the choice to buff or counter your opponents with your summoner. Sometimes it can pay off to try and counter the obvious attack.

How do you play back to basics ruleset?

Thanks for reading.
