Reflections on the Splinterlands Bitcoin Halving Promo Event: Balancing FOMO and Rationality

Promo Results.png

As an avid Splinterlands player, I've always prided myself on making informed decisions and weighing the potential risks and rewards. However, my recent participation in the Splinterlands bitcoin halving Promo event challenged my usual approach, leading me to reflect on the balance between FOMO (Fear of Missing Out) and rational decision-making.

When the event was announced, I found myself facing a dilemma. On one hand, I had reservations about the precedent it established and the high cost of the cards being offered. Yet, on the other hand, my completionist personality kicked in, and I couldn't shake the feeling of wanting to participate.

With limited time to deliberate, I succumbed to FOMO and decided to take part in the event. In hindsight, I wonder if the short duration of the event was intentionally designed to capitalize on FOMO and spur quick decision-making. Regardless, I made the choice to invest in the event, sacrificing potential progress in other areas, such as expanding my land holdings.

As I awaited the results of my purchases, I couldn't help but question the value of the cards I had acquired. Despite their high cost, they didn't seem particularly useful in the current meta, and I found myself hesitant to use them in battles. The only thing left to see is if the raffle chances will help offset some of the costs..

Now, as the event draws to a close, I'm left wondering if my participation was justified. Will the RNG draws at the end of the event provide any consolation for the sacrifices I made? Or will I be left feeling regretful for succumbing to FOMO and straying from my usual rational approach?

In the end, my experience with the Splinterlands bitcoin halving Promo event serves as a reminder of the importance of balance. While FOMO can be a powerful force, it's essential to maintain a rational mindset and carefully consider the implications of our actions. Moving forward, I'll strive to find that balance between seizing opportunities and making informed decisions, ensuring that my choices align with my long-term goals in Splinterlands and beyond.

I'm also a completionist and understand the need to support the company through events like these. I decided that I wanted access to both of these monsters at max level, so I purchased vouchers right around when the price was announced. However, on the day of the sale, people were posting their GF promos for much less than I perceived their value to be. I even sold my vouchers into DEC for a slight profit!

I was able to buy the BCX for a fully maxed GF rare promo for less than what it would have cost to buy the RF 115 BCX of the card for max level. I was also able to pick up the GF legendary promo with bids around $125, so I was able to max the GF legendary for about 2x the price of what it would have cost to max the RF legendary. 2x is a great multiple when it comes to comparing the price of RFL and GFL.

Ultimately, I did not care about any of the freebies given away with the leaderboard for this promotion, so that part of the event was not a motivating factor for me. I was a little bummed that my money went to the secondary market rather than the company, but without the ability to buy guaranteed gold foils, it was always going to be the outcome that I bought my GF cards from the market.

In years past, I would have bought from the company, sold/rented the RF promos while purchasing the GF promos. However, due to the limited demand of the card market and rental market, I just felt it was better to make my purchases directly. For what it's worth, I would have liked to see the proposal to pay the company from the SPS DAO for the promo to pass, and I voted as such. Hopefully, it was a success in raising funds for company while giving out some of those promotional assets in the sale.
