Splinterlands: Ideas for the Collectible Side of Trading Cards

I recently watched a YouTube video from @infidel1258 and it got me thinking about the Collectibility aspect of our ecosystem. I have been hooked on the game for 5 years, not only for the gameplay and Web3 experience but also the excitement of reminding me of my youth when I collected cards with my dad. I still have them all and I often get nostalgic when looking at that as I still remember buying or pulling cards after decades.

Splinterlands is surely under some pressure with the o going bear market but I believe the team has been one of the most innovative of the Web3 space but has not been able to get to the next level of adoption. It could be time to get less innovative (in a way) and bring in aspects of tradition to cause some interest from both existing and future participants in the ecosystem. There is a thought of adding more scarcity to the assets available and taking the Gold Foil concept up a notch. Here is my idea for a Holographic 1/1 card for the upcoming editions of Splinterlands.

The team would develop 1 special edition Holographic card for each card in the new edition. This would be a 1 of 1 opportunity so will be extremely rare but given the amount of cards being released; the chase will be ongoing as it will take time for all of them to be revealed. The recent 1 of 1 card from the Magic The Gathering Lord of the Ring expansion sold for over $2 million but that was not the big news; it was the search for that one card leading up to the opening and subsequent sale that had media attention. Imagine how that could interest some in the gaming space.

In order for this to be of interest to the expanded market, it would have to also have special aspects as well as only a digital 1/1 would like no atract some. That is why I would suggest that the team also produce this card in a physical form to issue to the wallet that pulls each. There is precedent to this as VeeFriends also had a physical card set as well. The wallet could be linked in order for the issuance of the card be coordinated with the owner for delivery.

Taking it one step forward, the tram should work with a grading card company so that they deliver a perfect 10 mint to increase its scarcity not only in the digital world but also the physical world. It would take some planning as I am sure they will need to be coordination to print and find the perfect one with a subsequent physical burn or destruction of the extra copies. It will be an investment but it will cause large interest from those like @reseller that live for this.

The team could add even more innovation as they could also tie the ownership of the physical card to the digital card in gameplay. Similar to Runi, it could be on a layer one blockchain with a smart contract which provides the development team the ability to stake the card to the account that owns the physical card. It could be a qr code on the physical card that makes the team wallet move the delegation of the card among wallets of the user base. That way, when the card is exchanged physically, the in game card also goes.

Lastly, the team could provide large outsized bonuses to Reward Shares when the card is used in battle or additional Production Points when used on land. This would add to the utility in game in addition to the collectibility aspect physically. The team likely is strained for resources to pull this off but it could also be an initiative that the DAO provides funding for given the potential for it to be a word of mouth marketing opportunity. The team has proven to be innovative so this could be another way to continue that tradition and kick off more interest from players new and old.

This concept would be an interesting experiment. I think it would be cool if it took multiple card pieces to create the ultimate card. This would give members of the community the option if they want the card in the game while also sparking some interesting trades as the motivated player tries to gather them all on one account.

Any news revolving around the pieces and how close somebody is to obtaining the ultimate card would generate hype, bring in new users, and grow interest in the ecosystem.

Thank you for sharing your post and giving an example from MTG. We'll see how the Splinterlands team manages in these next few months.
