Splinterlands: Thinking about Vouchers

Screenshot 2023-09-02 at 10.40.32 PM.png

I will start with the disclosure that I hold a little over 10k Vouchers across the accounts I manage of which I purchase 3,200 last month as prices dipped (for speculative reasons). If these purchases are deemed to make the potential proposal a conflict of interest I am happy to sell them at the loss they currently represent.

Unfortunately, we continue to focus on the economy instead of the game play while the team focusing on releasing land to focus on other things. I believe that one area where no attention has been placed is Vouchers. In order to avoid them becoming DEC in which the supply got to an amount that would not be supported by the current player base or the utility, I propose taking some actions now for longer term stability of the economy.

Vouchers were released when the demand of assets (mostly packs) exceeded the supply going into the Chaos Legion release. As per Splintercards, we have now issued over 24 million Vouchers. While some have been burned with some of the releases, there is currently no utility for Vouchers to support this supply. Nightmare packs have been off the market and Riftwatchers only have half of its 3 million edition left. I do not believe that the team will release new assets in cards or packs that will exceed the current supply.

Therefore, I would propose that we immediately determine a hard cap supply for Voucher between 25-30 million. However, I would not stop there with changes. I would also propose that we reduce aggressively over time the daily issuance of Vouchers until we reach that hard cap. I would say we reduce the issuance by 25% every month end until the cap is hit.

This setup will also provide time for more burn opportunities to come and extend the time to reach the hard cap limit. It will also provide an opportunity for issuance to restart after burning events if the hard cap limit is ever reached in the future. If more utility is ever added, a new vote can update the issuance rate and/or hard cap limit of Vouchers.

Of the above, I feel confident about helping the longer term utility and place in the economy for Vouchers. However, I also have a short term idea to stop the bleeding in demand and help the utility. I would propose that we bring DEC-B back (with its 2B limit again) to provide the ability to convert Vouchers into DEC-B. However, I would change the exchange rate down to 25 DEC-B per Voucher.

This would act as a true floor price for Vouchers and it could create an additional flywheel for the assets. While it would potentially increase DEC type supply by 250m, it would at least make the soulbound and eliminate the dumping on markets. With the potential of land requiring more DEC for staking and burns, it could lead to a substantial amount of Vouchers being burned.

Before submitting for a Proposal, I thought I could share on my blog and with the community for feedback. Given my need for DEC for land coming, I do not want to burn 100k DEC if it is not in the interest of the community to see something like this as many other proposals have failed. Open to thoughts and adjustments!

It's worth thinking about, but I don't think we need to worry too much about them, it's easy to modify the value of vouchers, come the next card set, or whatever promo...

2 vouchers per pack, 5, 10, 100...?

Whatever is required to make VOUCHER whatever value we want.

I like the conversion to Dec-B idea.

It's mental to think of the current market price of VOUCHER in relation to licenses!
