The Unprepared Tract: Revisiting My Splinterlands Land Partnership

Every long-term Splinterlands player probably has at least one “FOMO story” from the early days of Land—and for me, it’s the tract I co-own with a friend, a relic of the 2021 hype when land was the talk of the ecosystem.

At the time, the excitement was contagious. The idea of owning digital land that could one day produce resources, mint NFTs, and connect to gameplay mechanics was something we’d never seen before in Web3 gaming. I already had four tracts secured, but when the idea of forming a fifth tract surfaced, I saw a strategic opportunity that was hard to resist.

The 2021 FOMO Play

There were three main reasons we went in on that fifth tract together:

  1. Regional Control – Owning five tracts meant I could theoretically control an entire region, which we speculated might have advantages in resource coordination or governance down the line.
  2. Castle Lottery – Having more tracts in the same region also increased the chances of landing a Castle, the rarest and most powerful land structure in the game.
  3. Rental & Airdrop Potential – Back then, asset rentals were booming, and the SPS airdrop was in full swing. The combination of yield and speculation made the investment seem like a no-brainer.

In hindsight, it was a classic bull market move—one built on optimism, excitement, and plenty of unknowns.

Fast Forward: Challenges in Deployment

Now, years later, that tract still sits largely undeveloped. Between the evolving requirements for land operation and the steady need for DEC, cards, and resources, it’s become clear that activating this tract will take significant additional investment.

While my producing lands are humming along nicely, this one has been in limbo—a constant reminder that even good assets need strategy behind them.

Still, I haven’t lost faith. I continue to believe that Land is the backbone of Splinterlands’ future, especially as new layers like crafting, Cinder, and Land cards roll out. The key is figuring out how to bridge the gap between potential and productivity.

The Next Move: Activate or Reallocate

Lately, I’ve been working through ideas to finally activate this dormant tract. One plan involves redeploying assets from my productive plots—moving cards and resources to jumpstart development. Another option is to sell a handful of valuable plots, perhaps even the Keep, to raise capital for infrastructure.

It’s a tough decision because every plot feels like part of a larger long-term vision. But activating this tract may also be essential for future scaling, especially if Land cards allow for more automated or efficient operations across multiple plots.

A Shared Dilemma

I suspect I’m not alone in this position. Many early Land buyers likely face the same challenge: large holdings that were great speculative plays but are now resource-heavy to activate. Some may sell; others might consolidate or partner up.

So I’m curious—what are others doing with their unprepared tracts? Are you holding, selling, or finding creative ways to fund development?

Land remains, in my view, the most strategic and transformative asset in Splinterlands. It’s complex, capital-intensive, and sometimes frustrating—but it’s also where the game’s long-term foundation is being built.

For me, this unprepared tract isn’t a regret—it’s an opportunity waiting for the right moment. With the coming Land cards and the next phase of gameplay on the horizon, the time to act might finally be near.

Until then, I’ll keep plotting—literally and figuratively.
