An early drawing of St. Augustine, Florida
A portion of the handwritten note at the bottom references Pedro Menéndez de Avilés who landed in Florida and established St. Augustine in 1565.

A year later in 1566 the first child of European descent to be born in what is now the Continental United States, Martín de Argüelles, was born in St. Augustine.

Virginia Dare, the first child born to English parents in what is now the Continental U.S., was born 21 years later in Roanoke Colony in 1587.
