My thoughts on my first week playing Splinterlands

avatar

My experiences and thoughts being a new crypto/splinterlands player.

I want to keep this short and sweet. I just to share some of the experiences I've had with my first week playing Splinterlands and my first week getting into crypto gaming. (Keep in mind, these are just my opinions. It's totally fine if you guys don't agree with me. I also am a very competitive player so this might not apply to all people! :)

++Onboarding / Barrier to entry++

As someone who's a total noob with crypto currency it was quite hard to figure out how to setup a hive keychain+wallet / using binance to buy hive / using tribaldex etc... just to be able to buy a little bit of DEC so that I can start passive earning SPS or buying a few cards that I needed.

I was a bit overwhelmed that I just used my paypal for the first couple days to buy some credits to get the spellbook + a bit of cards.

I feel like improving this process or having guides on how to get up and running (right on the splinter website) could be improved to help new players get into the game easier therefor growing the player-base.

++Bronze rewards are pretty bad..++

I've only been playing this game for about 6 days now, I'm already top 8 on the bronze leaderboard. In my opinion, it's only my first season playing Splinterlands and I feel the rewards aren't that great. As a new player I'm actually losing money.

As a competitive player, I spend more DEC renting cards per day to climb than I can actually earn winning games. This was a little bit of a turn off for me.. and honestly if it wasn't for me livestreaming and Clove supporting me my first week I probably would've quit the game.

I've come to the understanding that the game wants to incentivize players that rank up and add more cards to their collection, which I think is a really good approach so players don't just stay in bronze league every single season. But I feel there needs to be a better balance to allow new players like myself to rent some cards and be able to pay it off if I play the game a lot. Right now the game is quite the opposite.. If you play less - you earn more DEC. Where as in my opinion, if you play the game a lot and put a great amount of time/effort into the game, you should get rewarded for that -- instead, my DEC gets drained and there's not much point for me to play.

I was told to just make multiple accounts if I want to earn consistently, but I feel as a competitive player I want to put in time into completing decks on my main account and grinding for that #1 spot on the leaderboard.

++Conclusion++

I guess to sum it up, it was a bit overwhelming to get started - I hope they could improve the onboarding experience in the future. That should allow a lot of new players to join the community without feeling overwhelmed.

And on the competitive side, I wish I got rewarded for the amount of time/effort I put into playing Splinterlands and grinding the leaderboard. I feel like making 6 different accounts is just not a great solution - but again that's just my thoughts here!

Thanks for taking the time to read - this is my first hive blog! :D
If you want to see my gameplay, I stream over at https://www.twitch.tv/ocgkon about 4-5 times a week.

Hope to see you guys in-game!
Cheers,
koN.

It is quite the learning curve to get into crypto, some guides on the front end of splinterlands would be good. I mean it is a blog so wouldn't be hard haha.

as for losing money not every case will win and in reality, we shouldn't be playing to get rich but owning assets and a free market is the greatest thing. but the season rewards help and renting is far from always profitable

I started playing in late August and i checked your account and there are some things that I believe you aren't doing right.
First, the rewards in bronze aren't worth it. Maybe you were 8th on the leaderboard, but you dropped to 16th place after writing your post. That would give you 2000DEC at the end of season.

Second, you rent way too much. You are renting 332 DEC daily according to peakmonsters.
To make a comparison, I'm renting for 169 DEC daily, but I also put my own cards on the market for rent and they are giving me back 218 DEC. Which means that, even if I dont play, I'm still doing about 50 DEC daily. Considering there are 15 days in a season, that is 750 DEC.

But, on top of that, I get about 15 DEC per win. I'm lazy and don't have much time to play but if you consider that I'm winning half of those (actually it's more 55%) and you can play 25 games/day without affecting your ECR, then it's 13*15= 195 DEC daily. We're now hanging at 245DEC profit daily.

Finally, I get 4 chests everyday in Silver 1. Each chest has an average value of 60 DEC according to splintercards.com... So that's 485 DEC daily in silver 1 without even pushing.

Someone can get out of bronze only renting kelp initiate and venari wavesmith for less than 4 DEC per day.

Guys in Champion league are getting as much as 600 DEC per win but of course you have to invest more.

I agree that for new players, there is a lack of information and I'm trying to cover that doing guides here on splintertalk, but devs should put that information up too.

My advice would be to forget the leaderboard because people are renting like crazy and most of the time it's not profitable. I crossed paths with players renting over 900 DEC to be in silver. That just doesn't make sense.

Thanks for the feedback! :D
That's extremely helpful info. I plan on trying to move up to silver after this season.

Could you explain a bit more on how you can move out of bronze by only renting Venari wavesmith + kelp initiate? Because you're right I am spending around 330 per day on renting some legendaries, but unfortunately I still don't have enough power to move up to silver =/

Appreciate it man!
Cheers.

It take a little bit of time but you can find good deals on peakmonsters. I would say the reward system is far from perfect but I understand the problem the DEV's face. If they make it too easy to stay profitable in bronze 3 then 80% of the players will just stay there. Although I do agree it sucks being new and barely getting anything for your efforts. Im sure after time they will figure out the balance.

I absolutely agree that there is a brtal learning curve for new players. Figuring out wallets is a huge pain. Then you get to bronze and find the rewards are sad.

Its not that the developers want to get new players to spend more though. It's because they want to avoid a hoarde of bots coming in to mine all the dec and rewards away from real people.

I personally think there should be a different game to onboard people as one wallet holds all our items so it could be seemless transition from learner game to battle game. However, for now we are stuck with what we have :)

Good luck with the game and if you have issues I'll certainly try to help :)
