This is my favorite card: Yodin Zaku

Greetings, Splinterlands friends.

I’ve been exploring the entire Splinterlands universe for days now; and this time, I was analyzing the card rental market for competing in the Wild format when I stumbled upon the profile of an old, incredibly powerful card that’s practically a legend—one that marked a turning point in the game. I’m referring to the all-powerful summoner named Yodin Zaku. Although today he poses a significant hurdle for players with limited funds—since his cost is quite high, even for a card that’s been out of the meta for quite some time—I can’t help but recall the golden days of the Untamed expansion, as this is one of those cards everyone was talking about back then.

I recently faced an opponent on the battlefield who summoned the powerful Yodin Zaku, and even though my humble deck gave it its all, I was no match for him. This got me thinking about how a single summoner can completely alter a player’s strategy. Yodin Zaku is by no means an ordinary monster; he’s a legendary archon (as they call him now) who significantly redefined the game’s offensive play at the time, though he remains quite relevant even now, albeit quietly. In this post, I want to share with all of you a detailed and in-depth analysis of this colossal titan, exploring its mechanics and recalling why its presence used to make players nervous—especially since, back then, there weren’t many ways to counter it.

Anatomy of a Legend: The Mighty Yodin Zaku

To understand the impact of Yodin Zaku, we must first analyze what everyone calls “stats” along with the game mechanics, which are fairly simple to understand—even for someone like me who’s a bit slow on the uptake. Yodin is a summoner or archon of the Fire Splinter, of legendary rarity and part of the Untamed expansion—one of the most successful expansions in the game’s history. He has a summoning cost of 7 mana points; however, for new players who might be reading this, it’s essential to emphasize that, as a summoner and not a combat monster, Yodin Zaku does not have the standard individual stats—such as attack, speed, armor, or health—that we usually see on a monster card. His role on the field is purely strategic: he determines the element and maximum level of the monsters we can play, in addition to granting our entire team very powerful abilities.

  • A note on radical transparency: I want to clarify that the exact effects Yodin Zaku grants to allied monsters in the game are incredibly powerful; I’d say that even now, it can catch any player off guard, especially with newer cards. It’s hard to believe, but it’s true—its impact remains devastating. However, the reality is that there are now many ways to block that overwhelming offensive, so you have to play it more cautiously than before.

Technical Breakdown of Combat Skills for "Yodin Zaku"

To understand why this summoner’s synergies are so lethal and powerful—and how, in a way, we can still get the most out of it even at this stage of the game, with hundreds of other newer cards—it’s vital to review how the main abilities that come into play within what I’d call its “area of influence” actually work. So I’ll explain how each one works:

  • Summoner (Archon): The card that leads and determines the active splinter used in the game and, of course, determines the levels of the monsters allowed; however, generally speaking, it is the most important card of all, because it guides the power of the rest of the cards we have on the field, as well as the abilities they can use at a certain level.

  • Blast: This is an attack ability that deals 50% additional damage to monsters positioned adjacent to the target our card is attacking; in other words, if our card attacks the tank, the card right next to it will also take damage.

  • +1 Range Attack and Health: These aren’t abilities per se, but they do boost the stats of the cards we can play alongside Yodin Zaku. Therefore, most of the cards we play should have a range attack to take full advantage of this boost to our attack power. The health boost is certainly welcome, as it allows us to stay on the field longer.

Skills or Rules That Benefit

  • Close Range: This rule or ability—which can take either of two forms—allows ranged units to attack even when they are in the first position of the formation.

  • Enrage: This rule increases a monster’s melee attack power and speed by 50% (rounded up) when it takes damage; therefore, if it also has “Blast,” it can deal significant damage to the opponent.

Recommendations and Practical Strategies

To help you get the most out of Yodin, I wanted to share a summary of practical and simple strategies that anyone can follow, even if they’re new to it.

  • The rental route: If you don’t want to risk capital by buying it, renting is the best and cheapest option, and you can use it for an entire season.

  • Knowing how to predict your opponent: This isn’t as easy as it seems, but if you use the battle rules that apply to you, it’ll be much easier.

  • Strategic Use of Low-Cost Cards: One useful tactic is to use low-cost cards to prevent your opponent from playing the Yodin Zaku against you; this can work to counter Blast, though there are many other ways to do so.

End

"Yo Din Zaku" is one of those awesome cards you absolutely have to try. As I mentioned, you don't need a lot of resources to play it. Plus, even though it's an older card, the truth is that it's very powerful—though you do have to use it at the right moments. Anyway, I love this card; it's one of my favorites. I hope you enjoyed this.
