Modern Silver Tournament - Blasting Away

avatar
I have started playing some anytime tournaments, and they've been very fun! I enjoy these much more than the regular single-elimination tournaments where you have to play at a certain hour. It never feels good to schedule a time to play, maybe even rent some cards, and be out of it in the first couple of rounds. For me, these have been much more satisfying to play.

This was my first Silver Modern tournament. I only rented a few cards but they were powerful ones. I rented level 1 Byzantine Kitty, Dragon Jumper and Diamond Dragon, level 3 Pyromaniac, and, most importantly, level 2 Yodin Zaku. I took double advantage of Yodin, using him for my Fire Daily Focus!

The prize pool is pretty juicy:

image.png

In these tournaments, each person plays a number of game, usually 11, in a 24 hours period. The top X% (can be 20%, 30%, or 40%) advances to the next phase, which works exactly the same in the next 24 hours period. That means you only need enough time to submit all teams, twice, in two days!

Tournament Report

I am excited to try this tournament with Yodin. I had never rented him, so it's gonna be fun and a learning experience.

Day 1:

Match 1:

https://splinterlands.com?p=battle&id=sm_Jmr7OOMjppLqr5jtTjac&ref=olaf.gui

image.png

image.png

On the first turn, both my ranged units missed their attacks, with a 20% and 10% chance, respectively. Next turn, my back unit got taken out and the other ranged unit missed again. I started hitting my attacks on the following turns but, it was too late, since, by turn 5, my tank was killed before I was able to get their Coral Wraith. According to this great tool https://splintertools.io/history/bubke, I had about a 90% chance to win this game. With Kelya's extra speed, this can happen, but it always feels bad to lose a game where the odds were so overwhelmingly in my favor.

image.png

Match 2:

https://splinterlands.com?p=battle&id=sm_T10plGV0gVko8rg5XyLC&ref=olaf.gui

image.png

image.png

I countered Obsidian with Thaddius Brood but the key to winning this game was having Life Sapper take the damage from Iza the Fanged while growing and getting healed by Spirit Hoarder. Divine Shield was also very important, otherwise, my Life Sapper would have been killed on the first attack.

image.png

Match 3:

https://splinterlands.com?p=battle&id=sm_pyIDwThs7SXMTEG45lTH&ref=olaf.gui

image.png

image.png

Queen Mycelia gave me a huge advantage here. Their only sneak monster was being nullified by my Spirit Hoarder. My Acid Shooter hit the perfect target, Parasitic Growth, which allowed my Venari Scout to finish it. I could get very unlucky with my hits on the fliers always missing and never getting poison or affliction from Doctor Blight, but, according to the simulation, I had a 100% chance to win.

image.png

Match 4:

https://splinterlands.com?p=battle&id=sm_p7KZELgRRBImiDDDUjuU&ref=olaf.gui

image.png

image.png

This game really shows the power of Yodin. My attacks just melted the other team leading to a very fast and flawless victory. Their monsters were only able to make 3 attacks!

image.png

Match 5:

https://splinterlands.com?p=battle&id=sm_CkFykDaPLVzBsxYsypUh&ref=olaf.gui

image.png

image.png

I was getting scared of missing too much and allowing earthquake to kill all my monsters before I could kill Uriel, but it would require too many misses, to be realistic. I checked the odds and it was 1% to 5% for me to lose the game. The tool is not very accurate, as you get different percentages, every time you click predict, but it's good enough to provide an approximate result.

image.png

Match 6:

https://splinterlands.com?p=battle&id=sm_rF0pWdf8l1iLmJdhpUz1&ref=olaf.gui

image.png

image.png

This one was always a win for me. I didn't get any dodges, and I poisoned their Grund on the second turn. However, even without the poison, Grund would kill Blight and take out Queen Mycelia's armor on the first attack, and leave her with 1 HP on the second one, enough for her to deal the final blow.

image.png

Match 7:

https://splinterlands.com?p=battle&id=sm_ScK3km7xZsLw0tUylKXQ&ref=olaf.gui

image.png

image.png

I finally got to use Kitty and the flying dragons I rented. Even at level 1, those 2 dragons were fantastic. The 10 armor on Diamond Dragon meant it would take a long time to die. My cards were too strong for what my opponent had.

image.png

Match 8:

https://splinterlands.com?p=battle&id=sm_vQDVRFIkGU07GglIiaar&ref=olaf.gui

image.png

image.png

Here, I didn't notice the Blast rule set and used Yodin. Since it was 60 mana, Yodin is still probably a better choice than Tarsa, if I'm going with Fire. However, it might have been better to go with Kelya. I checked my odds I had about a 20% chance to win. I had a few key misses, which allowed Diemonshark to survive at 1 HP and get a huge trample turn. If I had Kitty at level 2, it would be the clear choice. From what I had, going with Kelya was probably the best option.

image.png

Match 9:

https://splinterlands.com?p=battle&id=sm_UUbAhd8fZgLGEOqF91HO&ref=olaf.gui

image.png

image.png

When I saw Uriel, I thought I had lost. However, at only level 2, without the healing, it wasn't enough to survive my magic attacks.

image.png

Match 10:

https://splinterlands.com?p=battle&id=sm_pHA9vymY2ztSKsbVQ4v8&ref=olaf.gui

image.png

image.png

A level 2 Yodin against a level 1 Tarsa. It's not even fair.

image.png

Match 11:

https://splinterlands.com?p=battle&id=sm_52kvyySmRRJIwrH42Www&ref=olaf.gui

image.png

image.png

Even with a few misses, I was doing so much more damage with Blast, they never stood a chance.

image.png

A 9-2 is a good start for the tournament. Should even have been a 10-1 if I wasn't so unlucky on the first game. Let's see how day 2 goes.

s

Day 2:

Match 1:

https://splinterlands.com?p=battle&id=sm_eLqFolTXikzYPxCE7jll&ref=olaf.gui

image.png

image.png

Very close game. If my Dragon had 1 more HP, I would have survived one more turn and won.

image.png

Match 2:

https://splinterlands.com?p=battle&id=sm_sBGHZULfvPUUPyXTMbwP&ref=olaf.gui

image.png

image.png

Even if my Diemonshark had missed, Nerissa would take out their Serpent of Eld.

image.png

Match 3:

https://splinterlands.com?p=battle&id=sm_W80MUWucFqoXBIccJ961&ref=olaf.gui

image.png

image.png

Uriel gave me too much trouble. They also killed my Adelade Brightwing before she could revive, which was a huge blow.

image.png

Match 4:

https://splinterlands.com?p=battle&id=sm_tX147wqp6KcQRHyWd2q1&ref=olaf.gui

image.png

image.png

Another dominating performance by Yodin. Kitty is also very strong, however, I was able to not fall behind on speed on most of my monsters, so I was not missing and dealing a lot more damage.

image.png

Match 5:

https://splinterlands.com?p=battle&id=sm_L5Swa2xTMj2aKBDjTabT&ref=olaf.gui

image.png

image.png

Yodin vs. Llama, already a classic Splinterlands match. With the Odd Ones Out rule set, Llama doesn't have his best friend, Kron. Without any self healing monster, Llama becomes much less powerful. It was almost a flawless victory.

image.png

Match 6:

https://splinterlands.com?p=battle&id=sm_6CeO2eGmIMdZX16EsidA&ref=olaf.gui

image.png

image.png

This time I didn't miss the Blast rule set so I didn't just bring Yodin. Quix was perfect because it allowed me to use 2 very powerful Dragons and nullify their Summoner. I quickly worked their tanks and soon the ranged monsters were at the front.

image.png

Match 7:

https://splinterlands.com?p=battle&id=sm_QDZ1FZWvkUpNCQpjK26z&ref=olaf.gui

image.png

image.png

Very similar strategies, however, since I get to kill their backline with Blast to feed my Grum, I have a big advantage.

image.png

Match 8:

https://splinterlands.com?p=battle&id=sm_tMJrursCr1rgOfX6xOYs&ref=olaf.gui

image.png

image.png

I think this really shows how good Kelya is when she can somewhat keep up with Yodin, in a big mana game. I checked the odds and it wasn't 100%. It was about 85% but I certainly know I can lose games with those odds. The most dangerous monster is Diemonshark, since it becomes very big and fast, when enraged. With trample, it can swing a game in a single turn.

image.png

Match 9:

https://splinterlands.com?p=battle&id=sm_Nn3yzQCdEhMXo2joQgN3&ref=olaf.gui

image.png

image.png

Speaking of losing games with 85% chances to win, this is one of those. Luck certainly wasn't on my side, in this tournament. I still feel I probably could have done better. Maybe not using Legionnaire Alvar?

image.png

Match 10:

https://splinterlands.com?p=battle&id=sm_UvfAyL0q4oIUoKoazgL6&ref=olaf.gui

image.png

image.png

And here's another 80% game that I lose. This was one that I didn't expect to lose. I was watching the game and it looked to be in the bag, even after several misses. However, there was a turn where I just needed to hit 1 more attack, and both missed.

image.png

6-4 on the second day for a 15-6 total. It was a great and fun tournament, even if, in 3 of my losses, I was very unlucky. I got 26,5 SPS, well worth the 220 DEC that Yodin cost me for 1 day. I will certainly play more of these Modern Silver tournaments. I've played Chaos Legion only, most of the time, but it's fun to use some other cards. Congratulations to Brooder, the champion, and to everyone else who played!

image.png

I hope you enjoyed reading this and if that's the reason you decide to start participating in these tournaments, please let me know!
