Hello there.

Today I'll share my battle using Grund. But first, I will share some of my thoughts regarding the monster. From my experience, I frequently use Grund in my Bronze/Silver battles. This is because of its Double Strike ability and what summoner it is under. It is an Earth, Epic, Chaos Legion card. At 1 BCX, it is a 10 cost monster with 3 Melee damage, 3 Speed, 0 Armor, and 10 HP. The usual Earth Summoners used in Bronze/Silver are Obsidian and Wizard of Eastwood.

Obsidian increases the Magic damage of all allies by 1. Wizard of Eastwood decreases all enemy monster's Armor by 2. With regards to their effect to Grund, Obsidian doesn't improve Grund, but Wizard of Eastwood can help Grund deal damage earlier.

Grund has insanely good stats at 1 BCX. It has good speed and very high damage. It also has high HP which works well with the healers of Earth. I usually partner Grund with Immortalis or Mylor. Immortalis makes Grund survive for a long time against Magic teams, and Mylor can help against Melee teams. For support monsters, I usually add Queen Mycelia for the Protect ability, Mycelic Slipspawn to split the opponent's damage, and Goblin Psychic for the healing.

Without further ado, let's get into the battle.

The Ruleset

SYB Grund Ruleset.JPG

This was a Silver battle, with Counterspell and Aimless Rulesets. A 99 mana battle is the highest possible so anything goes. I can think of a lot of different strategies for each summoner so I will try to counter as much as I can.

The ideal team for Fire is Yodin with Ranged attacks. A Melee sneak team is the next best thing. For Water, it can be a Melee team. For Earth Obsidian is not too ideal due to the Counterspell ruleset, so maybe a Ranged team is possible. For Life, it could be a Ranged team, but with the Aimless ruleset, a lot of their low HP Ranged monsters might be at risk. A Melee Sneak team is also an option.

The Lineup

CardAbilityComments
Immortalis.JPGDecreases the HP of enemy monsters by 1, and grants Void and Shatter to alliesThe Void can help me ignore the ruleset, and the shatter can help deal with a lot of armor from my opponent.
GF Grund.JPGDouble StrikeGrund's Double Strike works so well with Shatter. He also deals a lot of damage
Arkemis.JPGProtectTogether with Void, Protect will help deal with both types of damage against my monsters in the Aimless ruleset.
Spirit Hoarder.JPGTriageTriage can help deal with the random backline damage from Aimless.
Goblin Psychic.JPGTank HealI also want to keep my front monster healthy with the tank heal
Goblin Tower.JPGBlastThe Aimless ruleset can help spread the Blast damage.
Mycelic Slipspawn.JPGTauntI want to redirect the Sneak and Opportunity Melee attacks to my Slipspawn with Taunt.

For me, between the lineups I mentioned above, I'd rather go with this earth team with Immortalis. The Void can deal with Magic damage, as well as let me use my Magic monsters. The Shatter can work on high armor monsters which is to be expected due to the high mana battle. I have covered my front, back and everything in between so hopefully it works.

The Matchup

SYB Grund Matchup.JPG

My opponent decided to go with a very OP Llama Kron team with a lot of high value cards. Looking at the matchup, the Mitica Headhunter is scaring me with its 4 Ranged damage. They have a lot of Magic damage monsters that will take reflected damage and barely hurt my monsters, but the extra HP from the Llama is going to help a little. The -1 HP from Immortalis counters that a bit though. I think Kron will enter last stand because it has heal and we can't focus it with the Aimless ruleset. But enough theorizing, and let's watch the battle.

End of Round 1

SYB Grund EOR1.JPG

My Grund was a bit unlucky by taking a lot of damage even though it was an Aimless Ruleset. I expect it to die next round, but hopefully I can attack first to deal damage to their Grund before dying. My backline has not taken damage which is a good thing. The next round might decide the winner.

End of Round 2

SYB Grund EOR2.JPG

I got lucky since my Grund attacked before his Grund, and my Slipspawn targeted their Grund. My backline is still healthy and their monsters are getting low. Kron is actually at 3 HP. Will I be able to kill it before it gets the Last Stand?

End of Round 3

SYB Grund EOR3.JPG

This is really looking good for me now. Apart from my Goblin Tower, all of my units can not be killed by their attack. Mycelia and Kron have low health so hopefully I can kill them next round. But I don't think I can lose from this position anymore.

End of Round 4

SYB Grund EOR4.JPG

My team decided not to kill Kron and just spread their damage to both Mycelia and the Slipspawn. At this point I'm assuming I'll kill the Slipspawn and will be facing a Last Stand Kron. I'm not too scared of Kron with Last Stand though. I have Void, a healer, and a high HP tank in front. Magic Reflect will help me deal damage, and I also have a lot of monsters still alive.

End of Round 5

SYB Grund EOR5.JPG

Yeah, Last Stand Kron is not that scary with Void. He is healing for 5, dealing 3, and is receiving 3 Magic Reflect damage. Of course I wouldn't win against it 1v1, but this really shows the power of Immortalis.

End of the Battle

SYB Grund EOB.JPG

I am pretty stoked with this win against Llama Kron. While the battle looked one sided at the end, it was actually very close. The attack order of the Grunds in Round 2 was really the deciding factor. Of course, their monsters hitting my Grund in Round 1 contributed to that situation. I was curious about my chances and I had to look at the odds in Splintertools. My team always had the upper hand, with the lowest odds I can get being 55/45, and the highest was 73/27. The odds were frequently changing as well due to the Aimless ruleset. I'm thinking what happened in this battle is close to the 55/45 where my backline didn't focus and kill any target immediately.

The Result

Conclusion

I think that was a very exciting battle. Immortalis gave me a big edge because I can ignore the Magic damage reflected back to me. I don't usually beat a Llama Kron so this was an extra sweet victory. This is also why I frequently rent Immortalis. Not only is his rental cost low, he lets me make flexible teams that can deal with a lot of other teams. I think I set up my team perfectly. Protecting all of my monsters, and having heal on both the frontline, and the backline.
