Battle Challenge With Regal Peryton.png

Hi guys,

I'm back with a battle challenge and this week's card to play is the Cursed Windeku. Since I don't have my death splinter leveled up I only own a level 1 copy and had to get a little creative.

The Card

Cursed Windeku is a melee monster from the Chaos Legion set. With its high base health and abilities its best used as a tank, but it can also work as a back line protector in the last spot.

Abilities

  • Level 1 - Thorns
  • Level 5 - Heal
  • Level 8 - Slow

Thorns is a great ability against melee monsters which makes Cursed Windeku so strong in the tank position and especially in lower leagues. At gold level it then also gets Heal which makes it more durable and able to sustain magic and ranged attacks as well. Finally at max level it gains Slow which is a great de-buff and helps the entire team.

Cursed Windeku is a very strong card. Its mana cost is not too high so it's possible to play it in a lot of matches. The combination of Throns, Heal and high Health make it a very good tank while also having enough damage to take care of the opponents itself.

Looking at the price Cursed Windeku is definitely one of the most expensive Chaos Legion rares which further underlines the value of the card.
I do think the card is worth its price though and would say that it's an absolute must have for every modern death deck.

The Ruleset

Rules for this battle were Fog of War and Up to Eleven with 20 mana and all splinters except Water available.

The Line Up & Strategy

Design ohne Titel.png

Like I said in the beginning I don't have a leveled up death so I decided to go with the Drake of Arnak for the +1 Armor on all monsters.

As my tank I chose Cursed Windeku, because of the high health and Thorns. Especially with the Amplify ruleset this becomes even stronger. Behind that I used the Naga Assassin as a cheap off-tank, hoping for some dodges with the high speed. I then used two more cheap monsters, that would just absorb as much damage as possible.

Finally for my damage I chose the Life Sapper to have some magic damage and also because of the Lifeleech ability and lastly the Soul Strangler with its 2 attack.

Basic idea was to have Cursed Windeku throw back as much damage as possible with Thorns + Amplify and have all the small monsters be a pest to take care of with the +1 armor, while Life Sapper grows its health and Soul Strangler takes out the opponents.

Let's see how it worked out.

Round 1

My opponent went for a Thaddius Brood with a similar strategy. They put two cheap monsters up front with Chaos Agent and the Fiend and had Windeku and their damage dealers behind that.

In the first I take care of their Chaos Agent and Fiend and deal 1 damage to the Windeku, while they take my Windeku down to 6 health.

Round 2

Since we have no sneaks nor opportunity all monsters attack the first position which results in them taking down my Cursed Windeku, but in return I also finish off theirs. They basically hit each other and take the amplified Thorns damage, while the ranged and magic attackers took care of the rest.

Round 3

My Naga Assassin got pulled into the first position where it can't attack and since Life Sapper hits with magic there was no chance of dodging the attack. Their Soul Strangler and Weirding Warrior take out my Carrion Shade. In return my Life Sapper and Soul Strangler take their Life Sapper down to 2 health.

Round 4

Bildschirmfoto 2022-12-29 um 11.40.52.png

Their Life Sapper goes first again, ignoring the armor on my Chaos Agent and killing it right off. My own Life Sapper does block one hit from the Soul Strangler with its armor though and also lifeleeches itself for 1. My Soul Strangler then finally takes out their Life Sapper, pulling the Weirding Warrior into first position where it can't attack.

Round 5

Life Sapper tanks the two damage from Soul Strangler and my own Soul Strangler takes out their Weirding Warrior. With their Soul Strangler in the first position where it can't attack there's no chance for them to win and I finish it off the next round.

Conclusion

Bildschirmfoto 2022-12-29 um 11.46.34.png

I won the battle and 69% is also enough to confirm that my strategy worked. However there were some situations where things didn't worked out as I had planned. For example did their Life Sapper take out both my Naga Assassin and the Chaos Agent too easily, where I had expected them to last longer.

Regardless a win is a win and considering that I didn't have any leveled up cards for this splinter and playing in silver I think this turned out quite well after all.
