Renting My Way to Silver on Splinterlands: Was it Worth?

Renting for Card Power

While ranking up in Splinterlands, there are two requirements: Rating and Power. Although I was able to gain the 1,000 Rating through victories, I did not have sufficient power to reach Silver. To purchase around 13,000 CP worth of cards would be extremely costly (at least since the huge price spike since the SPS airdrop). Luckily, Splinterlands has a renting system enabled.

Using peakmonsters, I filtered for some gold or legendary cards that were on Rent offer for a decent CP/DEC rate*. I spent 227.5 DEC (2.33USD as of Date of Loan, 28th November) to rent the amount of CP I needed for 2 days. It took me a while to find some good deals (most were being automatically rented in few seconds, so I had to be fast). But finally, I managed to get there.

*Do note that usually, Legendary / Golden cards are not as cost effective, and for same price you might be able to rent a lot more cheap cards, I just didn't have the energy to put into that.

Silver III

Is Silver more Difficult?

While promoting to Silver III, you are asked to confirm due to the rise in difficulty. Players can now use higher summoner levels and higher cards. That would make Silver much harder, especially since I rented random cards without plan of using them in battle. Moreover, there are now two game rules instead of one, which might also make it more restricted on what cards you can play.

However, in one match, I noticed that my DEC reward for a win has almost doubled. This means that, being in higher ranks will be beneficial to an extent, although it is unlikely to give me the return of the DEC I spent with the amount of games I play and the smaller reward obtained. Having said that, I was able to continue my win streak without much trouble, considering others around the 1000-1100 rating had similar power.

More Chest Rewards

Well, not sure why I really wanted to up to Silver. One of the benefits is that end of season, I will have more Rating after reset. The second is that I get 12 chest rewards instead of 7 of Bronze II, which is almost double the rewards. Here are the 12 rewards I got this season:

Season Rewards

It depends on how you want to take the value. 5 of these cards were additional. If Djinn Chwala (Epic) was one of these, then there's a good chance that in my case, it was beneficial since it costs more than the rent itself. But if it was the Potion, common cards or the 1 or 6 DEC, well, going to silver does not seem quite exciting (unless you're renting and constantly playing to stay in Silver).

I have to also point out that the Daily Quest gives 2 rewards instead of 1. If you are doing it for the last day, you are getting an additional reward along with the seasonal 5 ones, which sweetens the deal.

Final Conclusion

To be honest, I don't think it is worth the effort of renting cards just to get to silver III. Part of the issue is the renting system is tough to get used to, so unless you know your way around auto-rentals, it can be a frustrating experience. Card owners seem to cancel the rentals a day or two before the season end, which means some my rentals got cancelled and I had to find new rentals in the last few hours. This is due the players would prefer to re-rent at higher rates for season end.

For now I will stick to my card-owned power and just enjoy the game. If I learn my way around the auto-rental system, then it would in theory, might be worth, based on your luck.

Nice write up on how your journey to Silver 3 was. Hopefully you'll build enough CP to consistently stay on your target league. Best of luck.
