Modern RARE Monsters You Need! - Part 4

In this post I want to spend a short time talking about the LIFE deck and Modern must own monsters, specifically RARE.

I will only give a final score based on a Level 1 but will talk about the potential of a card at MAX Level, Also I wont touch on cards which are Starter cards.

This will form part of a 4 part mini series where I delve into what I believe is the best RARE Modern monsters to own, looking at both Utility, Synergy and Cost.

Pelacor Arbalest

Pelacor Arbalest, What a good card to start off with, yes its slow and yes its weak in terms of HP but to receive Double Strike at level 1 is very good. Lets delve into what you get at Level 1, 2x Range, 2x Speed and 2x HP, So like I say other than Double Strike its really not a great start for this card, You may get a turn in you may not. The only real way to guarantee this is to play Shieldbearer with its Taunt ability. Lets look at what a difference MAX Level would be, 3x Range, 3x Speed and 5x HP with Double Strike and Flight. So better but still slow and low HP the only saving grace is the Flight, meaning the opposition have a chance to miss you, but its a slim chance with that speed.
So whilst MAX Level does make this card harder to kill, for me it doesn’t offer enough survivability to really be relied upon.

Overall Score 6/10.

image.png

Synergy wise, this card is perfect with General Sloan who will add +1 Range Attack meaning at Level 1 you will hit for x3 Range and MAX Level x4!
This does make this card more desirable but also does limit you to using General Sloan which then intern further limits you to really use ranged attackers to benefit from his bonus. It still doesn’t convince me this is a must use card, but I can see why it would entice newer players.

Overall Score 10/10.

Currently the cost is at $0.12 per BCX / 61 DEC - MAX Copy $13.8 / 7K DEC, So in costing terms its up there as one of the cheapest rare cards you can currently buy, This obviously has some impact on the decision to choose this card over another! For this price it does entice you into simply splashing out for a MAX Copy however id advise falling one short and get a Level 7 for the Cost, Utility and Synergy.

Overall Score 10/10.

Most defiantly a strong contender if output was just the focus but overall...Im not convinced! You rely on the use of General Sloan to boost the attack and without it the 6 mana cost could be used more effectively elsewhere. Don’t get me wrong both the Cost and Synergy is a strong 10 out of 10 but its let down by the overall Utility.

Overall Score 26/30.

Venari Crystalsmith

Venari Cystalsmith, is another good card, yes again its another slow card, however where this differs is it comes with more HP. Level 1, 1x Range, 2x Speed and 4x HP with Tank Heal, So a great support card, that Tank heal really makes this a worthy card to consider, without that this card would seem average. MAX Level would be, 3x Range, 4x Speed and 6x HP with Tank Heal and Dispel. So Max Level is really where this card becomes an exciting card, that power and speed with a decent health and 2 useful supporting abilities makes for an enticing buy. However that being said Level 1 is just good not great.

Overall Score 7/10.

image.png

Synergy wise, this card is another perfect card with General Sloan who will add +1 Range Attack meaning at Level 1 you will hit for x2 Range and MAX Level x4!
This does make this card a real interest for me, more than the previous because of the Utility this card brings in terms of support and output.

Overall Score 10/10.

image.png

Currently the cost is at $0.13 per BCX / 61 DEC - MAX Copy $14.9 / 7K DEC, So in costing terms its up there as one of the cheapest rare cards you can currently buy, This tied in with the Utility and Synergy makes this for me a must buy. Granted this currently a reward card, when this goes out of print I can see this card becoming on them that rise dramatically in price.

Overall Score 10/10.

image.png

image.png

In short this a very capable card. Once again you are some what at the mercy of using General Sloan but not as much of a need as this card brings its own Utility, Obviously for it to be a 10/10 Synergy you will need to use this Summoner but also take into consideration the BCX and this makes this a must watch.

Overall Score 27/30.

Temple Priest

image.png

Ive actually found myself using this card alot more in recent weeks. This tied in with Djinn Renova is a great Magic mix. Level 1, 2x Magic, 1x Speed and 4x HP, So a very slow attacker with Low HP but with Magic so that will hit direct to the oppositions HP. But you must also take into consideration that its slow and weak so will it get a chance to attack! MAX Level would be, 4x Magic, 2x Speed and 6x HP with Dispel. So Max Level is really more capable but its still a very slow card! It will all come down to the costing on this card.

Overall Score 6/10.

image.png

Synergy wise, This card isnt the one to play with Sloan you wont get any buff, however this card maybe one to hold onto for the potential of the upcoming Legendary summoner, especially after seeing the artwork which seems to suggest a somewhat Mage aspect. However based on what we currently have in front of us the score is reflected.

Overall Score 5/10.

image.png

Currently the cost is at $0.44 per BCX / 217 DEC - MAX Copy $50 / 25K DEC, So in costing terms its up there as one of the more expensive rare cards, but this is understandable, its been around a lot longer than the current Chaos cards so has had time to inflate. That being said for 1 BCX its 100% worth a buy.
For me I would try and pick up a Level 3 or 4.

Overall Score 8/10.

image.png

image.png

Another great card to look into I would possibly have this as my number 2 out of the others reviewed. I think for Cost and Utility its a win but Synergy at this time isnt the best.

Overall Score 19/30.

image.png

Overall:

In short my advise would be to pick Buy a Venari Crystalsmith and Consider a Temple Priest but when it comes to Pelacor Arbalest I would personally Avoid that one for now. The Venari for me offers more Utility, Synergy and Cost benefits.
