My BATTLE MAGE SECRET Weekly Challenge! Explosive Weaponry

avatar

Hello there, this is my entry to the latest "Battle Mage Secret Weekly Challenge!". If you want to participate or learn more about the challenge, click here. This week we have to formulate a strategy with the Explosive Weaponry ruleset.

RULESET: Explosive Weaponry

With the Explosive Weaponry ruleset in action, all units gain the "Blast" ability.

This ruleset is very simple and easy to understand as all the monsters will gain the 'Blast' ability. These abilities. So, having a unit with 'Reflection Shield' ability in your lineup could be a game changer to absorb that blast damage and protect your back line.

Let's see how this ruleset affects my lineup and how I strategies for the following battle.

My Lineup

This is my lineup for the battle

Position
Summoner/Monsters
Summoner
Underboss Fabino
Position 1
Legionnaire Alwar
Position 2
Fungus Fiend

It was just a 14-mana cap battle and had only the 'Explosive Weaponry' ruleset which as we already saw will give all the units the 'blast' ability.

Only Fire, Earth and Life elements were active during this battle. I just had 14 mana to worth with and it was tough to choose what I should do but I finalised the Underboss Fabino as my summoner which will give me two options at the tactics stage: +2 armour to two units or poison one enemy unit.

I used the Legionnaire Alvar as my tank which costs 9 mana and I spent all of my remaining mana on this unit alone...why? Because it dealt 3 melee attack damage and came with 8 armour along with a 'void armour' ability it will be protected well even against mages. I wanted to use my summoner's buff on this unit and increase its attack even further which I did during the battle too. It also has a 'Giant killer' ability so if my opponent decided to use a unit costing 10 then it would have done double damage too.

Next in my lineup was Fungus Fiend which was a zero mana cost unit and I placed it just for fun. I knew it would be dead because it would receive the blast damage so I didn't expect anything from this one. All my focus was on my first unit and this was just a filler.

I just had mana for these two units only, I knew I was taking a risk by putting everything on just one unit but it was a calculated risk!

Now that my lineup was set, it was time for battle.

I will share my battle here, which I have uploaded to YouTube.

My Strategy

As this was just a 14 mana cost battle, I had to utilize every drop of it carefully. I spent 5 on my summoner, Underboss Fabino because I wanted to have two options at the tactic stage so I could make an informed decision of whether I have to poison one of my enemy units or increase the melee attack damage of my units. This proved to be advantageous for me!

I used the Legionnaire Alvar because it had a good amount of health and a massive amount of armour and this armour could not be ignored even by magic attackers as the unit comes with a 'Void Armour' ability. It is also a giant killer so if my opponent tried to use a single unit it would be bad for them.

This strategy, as you will see, worked in my favour and gave me a comfortable win at the end.

My opponent went with an interesting strategy. They used the Venator Kinjo in the second position and it has the 'Reflection Shield' ability which makes it immune to blast damage. This was a very important part of their lineup and it helped them almost achieve victory in this battle.

I increased my Legionnaire Alvar's melee attack to 5 but still, it was not enough to get my opponent's first unit in the first round.

The enemy units managed to get rid of my tank's armour at the start of round 2 and soon their Pelacor Conjurer got eliminated which made their entire lineup vulnerable to blast damage.

My tank got close to getting eliminated but the tables turned in round 3 and the blast damage was powerful enough to take down a couple of units putting their ranged attacker at the front of the lineup which means it could no longer attack and one more powerful strike would end this battle. It was a close one but I came out victorious. Things could have gone either way in this one.

Conclusion

As you saw in the above battle, having attacking strength and ways to counter your opponent's aggression is important during the 'Explosive Weaponry' ruleset. You can see two different strategies in this battle implemented by both of us and it was too close but I won by a small margin. So, using a unit at the second position with a 'Reflection shield' ability can be a good strategy as it will protect the back line from taking the blast damage. Or you can just go all in on one strong unit and not care about your back line, especially when it is a low mana cap battle like the above battle.

So, there can be multiple strategies. Let me know which one you prefer in this ruleset.
