My BATTLE MAGE SECRET Weekly Challenge! Melee Mayhem

avatar

Hello there, this is my entry to the new "Battle Mage Secret Weekly Challenge!". If you want to participate or know more about the challenge, click here. This week we have to formulate a strategy with the Melee Mayhem ruleset.

RULESET: Melee Mayhem

With the Melee Mayhem ruleset, Melee units can attack from any position.

The 'Melee Mayhem' ruleset is easy to understand melee units placed in any position will be able to attack otherwise normally they can only strike from the first position without any special abilities.

This encourages players to mostly use melee attackers and we can take this advantage and strategies according. I prefer using tanks with 'shield' abilities and bloodlust abilities.

Let's see how this ruleset affects my lineup and how I strategies for the following battle. But first, let's focus on my lineup.

My Lineup

This is my lineup for the battle

Position
Summoner/Monsters
Summoner
Grandmaster Rathe
Position 1
Chaos Knight
Position 2
Dumackle Exile
Position 3
Celestial Harpy
Position 4
Luminous Eagle
Position 5
soul Fiend

It was a brawl battle having a 34-mana cap and it had 3 rulesets:

  • Up Close & Personal - Only monsters with melee attacks may be used in battles.

  • Melee Mayhem - Melee attack monsters can attack from any position.

  • Even Stevens - Only monsters with even Mana costs may be used in battles.

Only 'Life' and 'Death' rulesets were active during this battle.

All except Fire and Life elements were active during this battle. So, I went with Grandmaster Rathe as my summoner which gave all the units an extra armour point that is going to be very effective against melee attackers. All other abilities given by him were useless for this battle.

I used the Chain Golem as my tank. It is a nice defender that comes with a lot of health and armour. But the best part is its 'shield' ability which reduces damage taken from Melee attackers and was perfect for this battle. Not only defence but its attack is very powerful too, dealing 3 melee attack damage with each attack.

Next in my lineup was Chaos Knight who also dealt 3 melee attack damage per round and cost 6 mana. Like the primary tank, it also comes with a 'shield' ability which makes it very effective as a secondary tank.

Dumacke Exile was next in my lineup, another 6 mana costing unit dealing 3 melee attack damage. But it had better speed than the rest and comes with 'sneak' ability which attacks from the end of the enemy lineup and adds to the surprise factor. Not everyone puts strong units at the back of their lineup.

In the fourth position, I placed the Celestrial Harpy which is a cheap unit costing just 2 Mana but comes with two nice abilities: 'flying' and 'opportunity'.

Luminous Eagle was placed in the next position, it also comes with 'flying' ability which makes it harder to hit. It also deals 3 melee attack damage which is not bad for a unit costing 6 mana.

Last but not least was Soul Fiend, a zero-cost unit placed at the end to take a couple of hits from the enemy striker, especially from those with 'opportunity' or 'sneak' abilities. I didn't expect much from this unit.

Now that my lineup is set let's talk about my strategy for this game.

My Strategy

My strategy during the Melee Mayhem ruleset is always to go with units with abilities like 'shield' and 'thorns' and give them extra protection in the form of additional armour as you expect your opponent to use melee units.

Since I only had two active elements, I went with the Grandmaster Rathe as my summoner that gives additional armour to all the friendly units.

I used powerful melee attackers in the first three positions while keeping in mind that I was using units with good defences and having 'shield' ability to both my tanks was such a blessing.

I also used units with 'sneak' ability as more often than not you will find some weak units at the end of the lineup, especially in lower leagues.

This strategy, as you will see, worked in my favour and gave me an easy win in the end.

I will share my battle here, which I have uploaded to YouTube. Battle Link

My opponent went with the Cursed Windeku as their tank who had the 'thorns' ability. They also had some powerful strikers but the difference is very clear, they didn't have much armor as protection.

Round 1 was a successful round for me as it saw the demise of their tank and I didn't take much beating.

The next round didn't go too well as more units got eliminated from the opponent's camp.

It was looking bad but their last three units had much better health so I was not sure if I could pull it off but my defences were much stronger.

They put up a good fight at the end of the battle but it was like stopping the inevitable.

They only managed to take down my Chain Golem during this entire battle so it was a one-way traffic, I guess. Having extra armour is very effective and I registered an easy win.

Conclusion

Melee Mayhem is an interesting ruleset, it encourages you to use more melee attackers so you can already start to prepare against it. I go for units with abilities like 'shield' and 'thorns' just as you saw in the above battle.

I used a relatively strong tank at the front in the form of Chain Golem and went back to the fundamentals of the game. Also, having some extra armour is so effective if you know that the opponent is going to be using a lot of melee attackers.

I used two 'sneaky' monsters too which attacked the last unit in the enemy camp most often than not players have weaker units at the end which can be a good strategy as well.

Let me know what's your strategy with this ruleset.
