My BATTLE MAGE SECRET Weekly Challenge! Odd Ones Out

Hello there, this is my entry to the new "Battle Mage Secret Weekly Challenge!". If you want to participate or know more about the challenge, click here. This week we have to formulate a strategy with the Odd Ones Out ruleset.

RULESET: Odd Ones Out

With the Odd Ones Out ruleset, only units with odd mana costs may be used.

The 'Odd Ones Out' ruleset is super easy to understand as only units with odd mana cost can be used in your battles but it doesn't affect summoners.

Let's see how this ruleset affects my lineup and how I strategies for the following battle.

My Lineup

This is my lineup for the battle

I only had one ruleset in this battle to make things simpler.

All except Fire and Water elements were active during this battle. It was a 40 mana cap battle and I went for heavy magic attack damage and used Obsidian as my summoner which increased the magic attack of all my units by 1.

I used the Legionnaire as my tank. It is a great defender that comes with a lot of health and armour. But the best part is its 'Void armor' ability which is extremely effective against mages. Not only the defender it is a nice attacker too that deals 2 melee attack damage.

Next in my lineup was Regal Peryton who was a mage that dealt 1 magic attack damage with good speed and had a 'flying' ability which made it harder to attack. It only cost 5 mana.

Uraeus was placed in the third position in my lineup. It only cost 3 mana but dealt 2 melee attack damage. It comes with a 'sneak' ability which attacks the enemy back line. Because of its low health, I placed it in the middle of my lineup.

In the next position, I used Tortisian Chief which was a heavy magic attacker dealing 2 magic attack damage. It only costs 5 mana and has a decent amount of health.

The only ranged attacker in my lineup was Venari Seedsmith. It also cost 5 mana and dealt 2 ranged attack damage and comes with a nice ability called 'scavenger'. It gains 1 health every time any unit dies which makes it last much longer in your battle.

Last but not least was Mycelic Slipspawn, which deals a lot of damage and comes with a lot of health. Its most important part is its 'taunt' ability which makes it a target even when it is placed at the end of the lineup.

Now that my lineup is set let's talk about my strategy for this game.

My Strategy

My strategy during this ruleset was just a simple approach. I wanted to use a heavy magic attack damage. As only odd mana cost units were allowed I still had a lot of good units to use in my lineup.

Being a 40 mana cap battle, I used a strong tank in the form of Legionnaire Alwar. Also, I had enough mana left for me to use another powerful unit, the Mycelic Slipspawn which took all the hits during the initial rounds of battle and saved my low-health units that I carefully placed in the centre of the lineup.

This strategy, as you will see, worked in my favour and gave me an easy win in the end.

My opponent went with a heavy tank at the front called DryBone Barbarian as their tank which is a powerful striker dealing heavy melee attack damage but if you manage to get it early it becomes a lot easier to get the rest of the lineup.

And what they feared most happened right at the start of round 1, my units took care of their strong tank before it could deal some damage. Also, they misplayed it with their lineup adding a unit with a 'repair' ability but not having armor to repair...lol

It was way worse than I realised as they had much weaker units in the middle of the lineup which got obliterated one after the other.

My tank did its job beautifully and stood there for some time after eventually getting booted out in the last part of the battle which was too little too late for my opponent.

The battle only lasted for 3 rounds and it was an easy win for me which never looked bad. My opponent misplayed the battle but I was prepared for any challenge with my lineup.

Conclusion

Odd Ones Out is not the most interesting ruleset as apart from inactivating almost half of your deck it doesn't present much challenge. But it forces you to get out of your comfort zone especially when it is combined with other rulesets.

I tend to go back to the fundamentals of the game, using a strong tank at the front and supporting it with possible heal or extra armour and playing the weaker units at the centre of the lineup. I sometimes go for a strong unit at the back too just to not get caught by the deadly fire of those 'sneaky' units.

I try to use 'sneaky' monsters too which attack the last unit in the enemy camp most often than not players have weaker units at the end which can be a good strategy as well.
