My BATTLE MAGE SECRET Weekly Challenge! Wands Out

Hello there, this is my entry to the new "Battle Mage Secret Weekly Challenge!". If you want to participate or know more about the challenge, click here. This week we have to formulate a strategy with the Wands Out ruleset.

RULESET: Wands Out

With the Wands Out ruleset, only units with magic attacks may be used.

The 'Wands Out' ruleset is easy to understand as only those monsters with magic attack damage can be used during this ruleset. We can take advantage of this ruleset by using abilities like magic reflect which counters the magic attack damage. Having 'void armour', and 'phase' are useful during this ruleset as well.

Let's see how this ruleset affects my lineup and how I strategies for the following battle.

My Lineup

This is my lineup for the battle

Position
Summoner/Monsters
Summoner
Lorna Shine
Position 1
Magi of Chaos
Position 2
Dax Paragon
Position 3
Time Mage
Position 4
Spirit Hoarder

This was only an 18-mana battle and it only had the 'Wands Out' ruleset which as we know only allows magic attackers to be used during this battle.

Only 'Fire' and 'Life' elements were active during this battle and having just 18 mana, it was not an easy battle and choosing a summoner was an important part. Out of the remaining summoners I used the Lorna Shine as it gives the 'divine shield' ability to all the friendly units and this ability is very effective in low mana cap battles where one or two attacks alone can change the fate of the game.

I used the Magi of Chaos in the first position. It was a neutral unit and dealt 2 magic attack damage and cost 6 mana. I used it in the first position as there were no good options for a tank left. It performed well though even after having 6 health and no extra abilities of its own.

Next in the lineup was Dax Paragon, a cheap unit costing just 2 mana and dealing 1 magic attack damage. I decided to go for multiple cheaper units instead of going for a couple of heavy attackers just to maximize the effect of the 'divine shield' on each. Each blocked attack is going to be very crucial in a small mana cap battle.

The next mage in my lineup was Time Mage. It comes with just 4 mana and has a nice ability called 'slow' which, as the name suggests, slows down the opponent's attack and having a first-attack advantage is nice in these kinds of battles.

Last but not least was Spirit Hoarder. It costs just 3 mana and comes with the 'Triage' ability which can heal the friendly back-line unit. Having a healing unit in your lineup usually is a good strategy.

Now that my lineup is set let's talk about my strategy for this game.

My Strategy

With a very restrictive rulest and having only 18 mana to spare along with just 2 active elements, it was certainly not easy to come up with a good plan. All the anti-magic attacking strategies were not viable so I went with a heavy attacking strategy instead.

Using the Lorna Shine was a big part of the strategy as it gives the 'divine shield' ability to all the units which is pretty important in lower mana cap battles. I used many cheaper units to take advantage of this ability.

I used the unit with the most health in the first position as while it takes time to get off my weaker units can deal a lot of damage from the back. Magi of Chaos came in very handy during this battle. Also, slowing down your opponent's attack is generally a good strategy and I achieved exactly that by using Time Mage.

This strategy, as you will see, worked in my favour and gave me an easy win in the end.

I will share my battle here, which I have uploaded to YouTube. Battle Link

My opponent went with Franz Ruffman which allowed the use of one gladiator unit during this battle. As soon as I saw this summoner I knew I was facing a Captain Katie as it is an impressive gladiator unit dealing 3 magic attack damage with 'snipe'.

They had two weaker units at the front of the lineup and my units didn't take long to get rid of them. It was only the start of the second round when they were left with just the Captain Katie and since it was on the first position, its 'snipe' attack was not active and was attacking my tank instead. This was a turning point as my Magi of Chaos still had enough health to take that punch.

Luckily, Katie never managed to kill any of my unit else it would have been a different story altogether. The 'blood lust' ability is might powerful if it gets going but in this case it never looked threatening. The 'divine shield' protected my Dax Paragon otherwise the results might be different.

Conclusion

Wands Out ruleset is an interesting one as only mages are allowed in your battle and I love to play with mages. I have some experience with them. Countering magic attack damage should be taken very seriously or it can be a very quick battle.

My usage of Lorna Shine was just an attempt to counter those magic attack damage in a way as only two elements were active with less mana to spare. Generally using 'magic reflect' ability is a good strategy along with abilities like 'void armour', 'phase' etc.

But the most important is to not forget the fundamentals of the game, having a tough tank at the front is still a good strategy and if you can support it with some heal and other units, that is a good bonus.

Let me know what's your strategy with this ruleset.
