My Splinterlands Social Media Challenge! Testing new Strategies with FUNGUS FLINGER

Hello guys, this is my entry to the "Splinterlands Social Media Challenge!". If you want to participate and/or read more about the challenge, click here.

We are almost at the end of another fun season and as always I am looking to gain more knowledge about monsters and make new strategies with them. This week, we are focusing on an important unit called Fungus Flinger. This is a soul bound unit that comes with a special ability.

I have been using it for a while now but never talked about it so let's talk about its stats in detail.

Fungus Flinger is a common Earth unit which came out in the chaos legion edition. It is a soulbound unit and only costs 3 mana.

I had a level 3 unit and looking at the stats it might not look like the best unit. It only has 1 range attack and 1 speed and comes with only 4 health. But the best part is its 'Martyr' ability and this is a meta-changing ability. You can strategies and place it in somewhere where it is likely to be killed early giving your other important units +1 of all stats.

Let's see how I utilized it in one of my battles.

My Lineup

This is my lineup for the battle

Position
Summoner/Monsters
Abilities
Summoner
Obsidian
+1 magic
Position 1
Fungus Flinger
Martyr
Position 2
Runemancer Florre
No abilities
Position 3
Venari Marksrat
Marytr
Position 4
Drybone Raider
Double Strike, Shatter
Position 5
Beatrix Ironhand
Close Range, Thorns

It was only a 41-mana battle and had 2 interesting rulesets:

  • Going the Distance - Only monsters with Ranged attacks may be used in battles.

  • Unprotected - Monsters do not have any armour and do not get armour from Abilities or Summoners Buffs.

'Going the Distance' ruleset made it a very restrictive battle where only ranged attackers could be used. I had a good summoner for this specific ruleset, Fernheart which gave all my units the close-range ability so every ranged attacker can attack even from the first position.

I used the Fungus Flinger in the first position. I knew it only had 4 health and won't be standing there for long. I was banking on its early death so my next unit in line gets +1 of all its stats. Because of its slow speed, I didn't expect any attacks from it and it was entirely placed as a sacrificial unit.

Runemancer Florre was placed at the next position to take advantage of Fungus Flinger's 'Martyr' ability which boasted its stats even more. The unit had incredible stats from the start as it is a multiple-attack type unit dealing 2 magic and 3 ranged attacks on its own. It comes with a massive 13 health and swift speed of 4 on its own. And adding +1 stats to all these made it a beast on the battlefield.

In the next position, I used Venari Marksrat, this was another unit with 'Martyr' ability. The plan behind placing this unit here is similar to my first unit. I was not depending on its striking ability but happy if it gets eliminated early in the battle. This also costs only 3 mana.

Drybone Raider came in the next position in my lineup. This one also has multiple attack types dealing with 2 melee and 2 ranged attacks with 7 hp. It also came with a very useful 'double strike' ability. I placed it after the Venari Marksrat to take advantage of +1 stats gain if that unit dies. Although its melee attack was useful at this position but its twice attacks in a single round were enough for me.

Last but not least was Beatrix Ironhand. It costs just 6 mana and dealt 3 ranged attacks with great speed (4). It also came with a thorns ability (which was almost useless during this battle). This was my last unit and I put this in my lineup because of its attacking strength only.

Now that my lineup was set, it was time for battle.

I will share my battle here, which I have uploaded to YouTube.

My Strategy

I had 41 mana to utilize but a restrictive rulest with only ranged attackers being allowed. So I went with the summoner Fernheart which gave all the friendly monsters the 'close-range' ability which allowed me to freely use any ranged attackers and not worry about thinking what if they come at the front of the lineup?

I used the Fungus Flinger to my advantage by putting it in the first position and sacrificing it to gain +1 stats to my powerful Runemancer Florre and made it even stronger and more lethal. It dealt 2 types of attacks in a single round and both attacks were increased so it was a nightmare for my opponent.

Using a similar strategy I placed the Venari Marksrat before Drybone Raider and in case the former unit dies then the latter will become much more powerful and even stronger.

This strategy, as you will see, worked in my favour and gave me a nice win.

Round 1

My opponent went with Fire element and used Tarsa which was a bad choice and I knew they were not prepared for this ruleset.

Just as I expected my Fungus Flinger died in the first round making Runemancer Florre even more powerful.

My opponent's tank got eliminated by the end of the first round. And they had no units with 'close-range' abilities.

Round 2

Round 2 was a nightmare for my opponent, as they had no units with 'close-range' ability. One of their units was worthless and the rest were not powerful enough to even take down my Runemancer Florre. One after the other we saw the demise of two more units from my enemy's camp.

Round 3

We both knew the result of the battle even before the round started. My tank took down two of the enemy unit and the last one was a sitting duck who couldn't even attack.

This was an easy win for me all thanks to Runemancer Florre and Fungus Flinger's 'Martyr' ability. Both of them worked with perfect synergy during this battle.

Conclusion

Fungus Flinger is a useful unit and can be used strategically to boost the stats of other powerful units and make them more powerful. Its 'martyr' ability is a game changer.

This can be exploited in the Reborn ruleset so it will grant +1 stats twice and will make the adjacent units very powerful.

Let me know if you use this with any other strategies. That's all from me.
