Never Ignore Speed in Splinterlands

Hello, gamers. Hope you all are doing well. I want to share a battle today which surprised even me, not because I won, which looked like a dead battle, but because I won due to the stat that I always paid the least attention to. So, while choosing a unit to be deployed in a battle, all of us look for cool abilities, raw attacking strength, type of attack, health and even the armour, but pay less attention to its speed stat. I don't know about all, but I have interacted with some friends who think the same. I don't pay as much attention to the speed stat as I do to other stats on each card. But it is no doubt an important stat and can be a difference between a win and a loss. This happened to me recently, and I want to showcase that. The unit I will show for this is the Regal Peryton. Let's have a look at its stats in detail.

Regal Peryton is a rare unit from the Chaos edition capable of dealing magic damage, which comes with good speed and a 'flying' ability that complements the speed attribute even further. Even at level 1, it has 5 speed and goes to 6 from level 2 to 6. Its speed goes up to 7 with a max level unit, which is one of the best speed stats you can have for costing just 5 mana. This used to be one of my favourite units when I was actively playing in Modern Edition a few years ago. Even now, it has its use case in the Wild battles.

I will show you how its speed and 'flying' ability changed the fate of a battle.

My Lineup & Strategy

This is my lineup for the battle

Position
Summoner/Monsters
Summoner
Mylor Crowling
Position 1
Venari Marksrat
Position 2
Regal Peryton
Position 3
Furious Chicken
Position 4
Chaos Agent
Position 5
Creeping Ooze

Even stats matter even more in low mana cap battles, and this was just a 13 mana cap battle, perfect for showcasing how speed can affect the outcome of the battle.

It has Rise of the Common and Equal Opportunity rulesets, so this further limited the units we could use in this battle.

Mylor Crowling was my summoner, who gave all the units the 'thorns' ability. To utilise this, I had to make sure I don't spend all my remaining mana on just one or two units. That's why you can see a lot of low mana cost units at the end of the lineup.

Furious Chicken, Chaos Agent and Creeping Ooze were placed as distractions for my opponent to waste their time on while the Regal Peryton take down all the units. To make it even more powerful, I used the Venari Marskrat, which has a 'martyr' ability that increased the speed of Regal Peryton to 7 upon death.

Creeping Ooze was used to reduce the speed of the opponents' units as well. But I wasn't counting on it to survive for long in this lineup.

I expected this lineup to perform well, especially against a heavy melee attack. Every unit was placed with a purpose, and they were helping each other. Let's see how it worked.

I will share my battle here, which I have uploaded to YouTube.

My opponent went with Helios Matriarch as their summoner so they could use a strong gladiator card in this battle. Hugo Strongsword is a powerful unit in low mana cap battles mainly because of its raw stats and helpful abilities like heal, bloodlust and shield.

You can see how quickly it got rid of my Venari Marksrat and increased its stats even more. It was at speed 4 with a lot of health and shield against my unit with no shield. At that point, it looked like over for me. But I underestimated the speed difference, which played its part in this battle. Hugo missed its attack 3 times in the next 4 rounds, which was enough time for my units to take him out. If not for those misses, it would have been over quickly.

Conclusion

Sometimes this game surprises us like that, with seemingly the tiniest stat making a big difference. If you have also been undervaluing these speedy units like me, maybe it is a good time to give them another chance. I knew that this stat was important, but I didn't look at it like that before this battle. Or maybe I got insanely lucky, and sometimes that's all you need in this game and in life.

Let me know your thoughts about it. Which stat matters most to you during the card selection stage?

For speed my fav card is Ocean Jinn l2.
Speed + phase + void solid tank card. With some speed booster it will be untouchable. 🔥🔥🔥

But again the luck factor is there too. Sometime. Low speed high damage card lands a critical hit on you. 😕
