Lore

Hill Giants live in the Talus Bluffs on the outskirts of the volcano known as the Mountain of Ash. They are nomadic people that travel from hilltop to hilltop following herds of deer and cattle. Though they are intimidating, Hill Giants are typically far more inquisitive of other cultures and seek to learn from them rather than attack. However, if they need to defend themselves, they attack by ripping boulders from the ground and are able to hurl them up to a mile. The people of Praetoria are glad to have them on their side against the Chaos Legion. [source]

Hill giant is an interesting card, costing just 3 mana it can be used as a tank to utilize its 6 health points at the start of the lineup or be used strategically, in the end, to protect some weaker units at the back from taking damages. I have used it as a secondary tank in this battle.

My Lineup

This is my lineup for the battle

PositionSummoner/MonstersAbilities
SummonerMylor CrowlingThorns
Position 1Unicorn MustangVoid
Position 2Hill GiantNo ability
Position 3Goblin ThiefSneak
Position 4Venari ScoutOpportunity
Position 5Regal PerytonFlying
Position 6Khmer PrincessNo ability

I used Mylor Crowling as my summoner, giving thorns ability to all my monsters (dealing damage back to melee attackers). It was a standard battle with no modification to the ruleset. Mana cap was 26 mana.

In the first position, I placed the Unicorn Mustang as my tank. Its void ability allowed it to take less damage from magic attacks. Although it costs 8 mana but deals with a heavy amount of melee attacks with good speed and massive health of 10 hp. Moreover, I guessed looking at my opponent's previous battle that they use mages all the time. So, it was an easy decision to use this card.

Next came the Hill Giant. It was a secondary tank, in case my Unicorn Mustang didn't work well. The only thing that I don't like about this position is that it couldn't attack from here but as it also had thorns ability (from summoner), attacks on it dealt damage back to attackers.

In the third position, I placed the Goblin Thief, a sneaky unit that can deal with some quick attacks. It has +2 melee damage on its own and can strike monsters from the end of the lineup. It helped in eliminating weaker monsters from the back of the lineup.

In the next position, I placed the Venari Scout, a low costing unit with an interesting ability, opportunity. This ability allows it to attack the weakest monsters in the opponent's lineup and is very useful as a surprise element.

In the fifth position, came the Regal Peryton, one of my favourite units in the entire game. It has a 5-speed and flying ability that makes it almost invincible to attacks from slower monsters. It also deals with magic attacks which always strike. I could have placed it a bit forward in the lineup as well.

In the last position, I placed the Khmer Princess, another mage from the earth element. It costs only 2 mana and has 2 health points only.

My Strategy

My overall strategy was to make the front of the lineup as solid as possible while packing the quick and sneaky monsters in the middle of the lineup to protect them from attacks and also make use of the sneak and opportunity abilities to the fullest and surprise my opponent with them.

I will share my battle here, which I have uploaded to YouTube.

ROUND 1

As I guessed already, my opponent used Obsidian as their summoner to boost their mages but I thankfully placed the Unicorn Mustang to counter it. My tank was still standing after the initial attacks.

Round 1 saw only 1 monster getting eliminated from the battlefield in the form of Xenith Archer.

ROUND 2

Round 2 was back and forth between monsters, my opponent's tank was getting healed by Goblin Psychic and my tank has enough health to absorb all the hits. Although in this round no monster gets eliminated but most of my opponent's monsters got too weak and I could sense the win after this round.

ROUND 3

Round 3 was decisive. I lost my Unicorn Mustang while the opponent lost all but two monsters. After this, it was just a formality and my win was confirmed.

ROUND 4 & 5

Nothing much to talk about in these rounds as it was one-way traffic and my monsters overwhelmed the remaining two monsters in the opponent's camp. In the end, it was one of the easier battles I had. I would give the credit to my Unicorn Mustang for standing long enough while my monsters at the back took down monsters one by one.

Did your strategy work? What will you try differently next time?

Yes, my strategy worked perfectly. I guessed that my opponent's focus will be on mages so, I planned against it. The only thing I would like to have changed in this battle is the position of Regal Peryton. I wasted it by placing it at the end of the lineup. I could have used its speed and flying ability to my advantage.

Do you like the Hill Giant? Why or why not?

Yes, I like it, especially in low mana cap battles. With only 3 mana its health of 6 hp provides good protection in those lower mana cost battles. In the high or mid-range mana battles I used it as a secondary tank or sometimes in the back of the lineup to protect monsters in the back.
