Splinterlands Community Engagement Challenge: Modifier Mastery

This week's Splinterlands Community Engagement challenge has the theme of Modifier Mastery. If you play this game, you know how many different modifiers/rulesets are in the game, which can completely change how you strategise and make a composition for your lineup. A small change can influence the outcome of the entire battle and is one of the first things I look at during the monster selection part.

Today, I will talk about one of the modifiers which gives me a relatively easy time. I will talk about 'Equalizer' and what my strategy is during that ruleset.

My Strategy

Let's see what this modifier does first. In this modifier, the initial health of each unit is equal to that of the unit on either team which has the most base health. This makes the base health stats of units less important because they are going to be equal.

This puts a lot more focus on retaining that health, and there come healing abilities, which is the most important focus here. If you can get the abilities like heal, tank heal or life leech, they work really well here. But that is known by all, and most players will go with that strategy.

Here comes the crucial part, which is adding units which affliction abilities that have the chance to apply afflicted status, which makes your opponent's card heal back up. That is very effective when dealing with this modifier. Also, if you can poison your opponent's cards early, that will help enormously. That's why I prefer a unit that can inflict poison as well.

And last but not least is going for units with less base health, as you will get them for relatively lower mana cost. I will show you how that helped me with an example. Let's look at the lineup first.

My Lineup

This is my lineup for the battle

Position
Summoner/Monsters
Summoner
Obsidian
Position 1
Chain Golem
Position 2
Spirit Druid Grog
Position 3
Doctor Blight
Position 4
Khmer Princess
Position 5
Goblin Pyschic
Position 5
Regal Peryton

The mana cap for this battle was 38, enough for adding a couple of units with tank heal and affliction, perfectly showcasing why this strategy works.

My summoner for this battle was Obsidian, as my primary form of damage was going to be magic attack damage, the best form of damage in the game.

Chain Golem was my preferred tank in this lineup because of its manageable mana cost and good overall stats. It comes with 'Shield' and 'Void' abilities, which make it very effective against any type of attack, and the extra armour is always good to have.

I used Spirit Druid Grog as my second unit; it cost 5 mana and deals 2 magic attack damage. Its base health was only 1, and that's why I rarely use it in normal battle other than this ruleset. Its 'resurrect' and life leech abilities make it a good tank in this modifier.

I used Doctor Blight as the source of poison and affliction in this lineup. As I already told in my strategy, how important both of these abilities are important to this strategy. It performed really well and poisoned the opponent units, giving me a flawless victory.

The next two units, Khmer Princess and Goblin Psychic, were the main source of healing in this lineup. Both had the tank heal ability, which can keep the tank alive for much longer. Goblin Psychic even had the Affliction unit, which proved very useful in this battle.

Regal peryton was used at the end to counter the annoying sneaky monsters who attack the end of the lineup rather than the frontline. It was meant to secure my backline. Also, its 2 base magic damage is a good source of extra damage. And for its speed, there is hardly any better unit in the entire game.

I expected this lineup to perform well, especially against a heavy melee attack or against units that rely too much on healing. Every unit was placed with a purpose, and they were helping each other. Let's see how it worked.

I will share my battle here, which I have uploaded to YouTube.

As expected, my opponent went with a heal-heavy lineup with the archon having the tank heal ability. I needed to have those units with Affliction to counter those heals. The poison from Doctor Blight helped me take down those tanky units quickly.

Conclusion

There are so many unique rulesets and modifiers in this game that interestingly interact with each other. This post was just focused on one of these, where I get the best results. This strategy is simple but extremely effective in the 'Equalizer' ruleset. If you know any other strategy, let me know in the comments below.
