Testing new Summoner from Rebellion - Underboss Fabino

Rebellion is out now; with that, loads of new units and some meta-changing abilities came out. It will take a long time for me to adjust and get accustomed to all the new cards and summoners as I like to take my time and develop strategies by focusing on one unit at a time. Once I get satisfied and experimented enough with a unit, I shift my focus to another. This week we will talk about a special unit that came out in the Rebellion edition. I am talking about the Rare Earth summoner, Underboss Fabino. It is a Tactics summoner which gives multiple choices before the start of the battle.

Let's start by looking at its stats in detail.

Underboss Fabino is a tactics summoner giving two choices or abilities/buffs/debuffs: a) +2 Mele attack to two Units or b) Poison one unit from the enemy lineup. And the fact that you can make this decision during the 'tactics' stage just before the start of the battle feels like a huge advantage. You can just see the enemy lineup and decide which choice will be best for you in that battle.

It only costs 5 mana which can be a tough choice in low mana cap battles but then its abilities will feel more powerful. So, I will say it is a nice unit.

I will show you how I utilized it in one of my battles.

It was a 32-mana cap battle in modern format and had the 'Standard' ruleset.

All the elements except 'Fire' were active during this battle so I could easily use my summoner. As you already know I used the Underboss Fabino that could be advantageous for melee-focused attacks because of its first choice to increase 2 melee attack damage of two friendly units.





My primary tank in this battle was Grund. It costs 10 mana (which is quite expensive for this battle) but comes with some nice stats, dealing 3 melee attack damage and comes with a whopping 11 hp. It also attacks twice as it has the 'double strike' ability. And don't forget I could increase the melee attack to +2 if I want to during the tactic stage. So, it was a good candidate for the first position. It held the frontline for some time.

Next in my lineup was the Bramble Pixie, another melee attacker dealing 3 melee attack damage and costing just 7 mana and having 9 hp too. Its huge health and 'reach' ability made me include it in my lineup and put it in the second position so it can still attack. And just like the last unit, I could choose to increase the melee attack further if I wanted.

Queen Mycelia came in the third position. It was a magic attacker, dealing just 1 magic attack with slow speed and just 4 health so, why did I use it? Because of its 'protect' ability which gives all the friends units +2 armour and it increases the defences of the whole lineup with just this unit. It only cost 4 mana!

I had a couple of powerful tanks with good health and extra armour so the only thing left was to add more Heal and that's why I placed Goblin Psychic in my lineup. It not only has the 'tank heal' ability which heals the unit at the first position but also deals powerful magic attack damage. So, it was worth spending 6 mana during this battle.

I had spent all my mana on the first four units so I could only use a zero mana unit, Fungus Fiend. It was placed at the end of the lineup just to protect my Goblin Psychic from those sneaky units. I didn't expect much from this one but it can easily absorb a few hits and save important units.

Now that my lineup was set, it was time for battle.

My Strategy

It was a standard ruleset and my strategy was to play aggressively and overwhelm my opponent with melee attack damage. That's why I used a couple of heavy hitters at the front of the lineup. To supplement the attacks further I used the Underboss Fabino so I could use +2 melee attack ability choice if I want at a later stage.

I used the Queen Mycelia so my defence gets strengthened too with the extra armour and to support my tank I used the Goblin Psychic which provides the much-needed healing to my tank.

But when I saw the enemy lineup during the tactic stage, they used the Venari CrystalSmith which provided heal and they all had +1 shield so I chose to poison their healing unit just to eliminate it sooner. This was a big advantage of using tactics summoner, I would have gone with the extra melee attack but seeing they had a low-health healing unit changed my plans at the last moment.

This strategy, as you will see, worked in my favour and gave me a comfortable win at the end.



My opponent went with Franz Ruffman as their summoner because they wanted to use Captain Katie, a gladiator card. As I said, I saw their lineup and chose to poison Venari Crystalsmith so it would not survive more than two rounds and provide heal to their tank.

Round 1 was just a testing round where my units got rid of their low health units from the front but they came back strongly in the second round eliminating my Queen Mycelia.


My Grund took care of their Xenith Monk and at the start of the next round, their healer got eliminated too leaving them in a bad situation. This is the power of tactics summoners like Underboss Fabino. Giving specific buffs or debuffs to specific units before the start of the battle is such a game-changer!

My tank was still standing there holding the entire lineup from the front and only got eliminated in the fourth round which is a great performance and kudos to Goblin Psychic for providing the heal after each round which made it last this long.


Bramble Pixie took care of all the attacks in the following rounds, of course with the help of heal and the last couple of enemy units were eliminated easily without giving much fight.

In the end, it was an easy win with my tanks and healer having great synergy and working together beautifully. All the units contributed to this battle, starting from the summoner!



Conclusion

As you just saw in the above battle, Underboss Fabino is a powerful choice summoner giving two different choices during the tactics stage just before the start of the battles. As you can see from the example battle I shared, I wanted to give extra melee attack damage before the tactics stage but after I saw the enemy lineup and realised that there is only one heal with low health and that can be the binding factor for my opponent. I used the poison ability on that unit to get rid of it in only two rounds.

This is such a game changer update and a summoner like this will be very useful after this rebellion drop. Can't wait to test all the new units that came out during this rebellion edition. Hope you like Underboss Fabino as much as I do. I can't recommend it enough!
