Battle Mage Secrets - Battle Of The Giants

The theme for the current "Battle Mage Secret" challenge is Fab Four ruleset this time! This means up to four Units can be used. It's not always easy to get the specific ruleset, but if you play hard enough, you definitely can find one! This time I was lucky enough to have one - woohoo!

So here's the interesting battle that I encountered.

Anyway, I thought it would be still be interesting to introduce some useful cards and show how their strengths can be maximised especially with a particular ruleset. In this post, the featured card is a Legendary Dragon card, Chaos Dragon!

Big mana cards such as Chaos Dragon have limited utility in the past because it's really hard to accommodate them in lineups unless in high mana fights, which are not very rare for Silver players like me. Then came interesting rulesets such as Fab Four - and the utility of Chaos Dragon was immediately revived! With extremely tanky stats, high damage and high speed, there's nothing to pick on this card. Also, it also packs Flying and Scattershot abilities! When the situation calls for it, Chaos Dragon definitely does not disappoint and I am glad I have this amazing card in my collection!

As usual, here's the lore for Chaos Dragon for your reading interest:

The Chaos Realm has preyed upon many a world, opening rifts in time and space to invade the lands and take from its people. When they attacked Praetoria and the Splinterlands, it was first thought that the minions were compelled through the portal for their fear of the dark shade that lurked beyond the gate, the shadowed image of Uul. Eventually though, when the last of the armies stepped through, there came such a prodigious monster that at first, none could believe it was real. A nightmare dragged forth into reality.

As it flew through the spinning vortex, the Chaos Dragon let forth a violent shriek, so loud that it was felt in the far reaches of every Splinter. The people of Praetoria fell to their knees, terror taking the strength from their legs and the courage from their hearts. For an army of monsters can be fought, the land defended with righteous fervor. But when even the invading hordes are fleeing before such a beast, what hope can there be? The answer is none when the eater of worlds has arrived, the true devourer of existence.

Surely such a thing couldn't be the puppet of Uul? How could anyone command a creature that has flown from one cosmos to another, feeding upon alien planets? But it was his most potent being, one that existed before time had conceived the very gift of life itself.

Battle Type & Team Lineup

PositionCard/LevelMana
SummonerDelwyn Dragonscale5

With 49 mana spread over 4 cards, I definitely need as many big cards I can find. The first card that came to my mind was Chaos Dragon, and naturally, I needed a Dragon Summoner and Delwyn Dragonscale comes to mind.

PositionCard/LevelMana
1Grund10

I needed a massive tank and Grund fits the bill. With Blast in play, the Double Strike is especially strong because this means dealing up to a total of 10 damage in one round.

PositionCard/LevelMana
2Goblin Psychic6

I wanted a healer and Goblin Psychic is chosen and is carefully hidden in the second position. With just 4 cards in play, the third card is especially vulnerable to Sneak attacks. Moreover, I will be employing a Taunt card at the end.

PositionCard/LevelMana
3Chaos Dragon14

Chaos Dragon is my strongest card in this lineup, packing huge damage and tanky stats. Hopefully the Scattershot will come in handy for this Blast battle. It's also parked beside my Taunt card so it will receive some collateral damage.

PositionCard/LevelMana
4Mycelic Slipspawn9

Mycelic Slipspawn was the Taunt card that I was looking for to attempt to reduce the amount of Blast damage. Being placed at the last card means only one adjacent card will be hit by Blast. And that card is strategically chosen to be the tanky Chaos Dragon.

All in all, I didn't manage to fill up all the 49 mana quota because I only have a limited amount of big cards, and there's also other considerations such the other two rulesets Thorns and Blast, and the overall strategy as well.

  • Pre Battle: Both teams put out very similar Magic lineups, with big tanks followed by Magic cards. The main difference is my lineup is of a lower level, and there's Chaos Dragon in my lineup.
    image.png
  • Round 1: With big hitters, Blast, Thorns all in play, the damage was flying all over the place and here's what left after the end of the first round. My opponent made a HUGE mistake by placing the Taunt card in the 2nd position, allowing my cards to Blast two adjacent cards. As such, I very much have the upper hand going into the second round, with Chaos Dragon striking first as it has the highest speed among of the remaining cards left.
    image.png
  • Round 2: It was either 6 (4+2) or 8 (4+2+2) damage from Chaos Dragon and it delivered 8. That left Arkemis the Bear in the opposing lineup, and one hit by Grund, and we were done!

Post Battle

Did my strategy work? The strategy was actually to have a big card collection and Chaos Dragon in this case made all the difference, be it dealing the damage, absorbing the Blast hits, etc. To further boost my big cards, I actually made an impromptu decision to add Ulundin Overseer to my collection too! The reason is because I see so many players using this card. Coming at 0.15 USD/156 DEC, this is pretty reasonable to just keep a Level 1 copy for these Fab Four rulesets in the future!

What's the Battle Mage Secret? Now is the time to get those big cards so that one can handle these new rulesets better and have a higher chance of winning!

So that's all I have! What are your takeaways from this battle? Feel free to comment below, as I am always keen to learn and improve!

As always, thanks for reading and have a pleasant day ahead!
