Share Your Battle - Just Like World Cup, The Underdog Wins!

The theme for the current "Share Your Battle" challenge is Gem Meteor! I realised I have this card in my collection but I hardly use it because I personally don't quite like Ranged cards due to their inability to attack in the first position. With this theme, I had to try and I found the perfect battle (after battling for quite a while)!

Frankly, its damage is quite disappointing for a 5 mana card, as many Ranged cards would likely have 2 damage at 5 mana. So the only choice is to pair it with General Sloan. As for Scattershot, I guess it's quite situational and it depends on whether the random hits are good or not.

As usual, here's the lore for Gem Meteor for your reading interest:

When the cosmos was borne into creation and the stars were placed into the heavens, everything had its place and travellers crossed the known worlds by the shapes they had joined together in the sky. As centuries passed, some of these stars were destroyed, either striking other objects or simply their light dying away, obliterated into tiny pieces. Meteors lit up the night for evermore, tracing lines in the blackness as they shot through the sky.

Astronomers have studied this phenomenon for many years and attribute the trailing light to a gathering of crystal dust upon the meteor. A crystal that holds great value when it falls to the land and is acquired by the people. But then chaos arrived, angry that mortals should benefit from such riches thrown from the heavens. Uul breathed life into these dead rocks and created the Gem Meteor, a creature that soars through the sky and flings crystal shards from its body at anyone unfortunate enough to get in its way. These crystalline missiles splinter and crack upon impact, ricocheting into everything nearby and inflicting devastating damage. Sometimes the meteorites descend into such a frenzy that they become completely indiscriminate about who or what they fire their shards at.

Battle Type & Team Lineup

PositionCard/LevelManaNotes
SummonerGeneral Sloan4With these two battle modifiers, General Sloan was the best choice and it's almost surely going to be a full Ranged lineup.
1Chaos Knight6I decided that I need two buffer cards to tank the damage because Ranged cards couldn't attack from the position so there must be someone tanky in front to buy time. Chaos Knight was picked because it's more resistant to Thorns damage due to his Shield ability.
2Pelacor Conjurer2Coming in at just 2 mana, Pelacor Conjurer is a huge tank with 4 HP, coupled with high speed and Flying.
3Gem Meteor5The star this week slots in at the third position as its high speed might absorb some misses at the later stage as well.
4Pelacor Arbalest6The glass cannon and it had to be protected at all costs. If it was gone early then my team would lose for sure.
5Venari Crystalsmith4No Life lineups is complete without Venari Crystalsmith, a very strong healer and syncs well with General Sloan.
6Thunderbird3A high speed card with Flying ability to protect the backline from any Sneak attacks.

  • Pre Battle: Looking at both lineups, I thought I was going to get thrashed. My opponent had a wide spread of Level 3 and Level 4 cards, and a 11 HP tank. Even my opponent's Ranged cards had higher damage compared to mine. Let's see what happens!
    image.png
  • Round 1: Both tanks survived the first round and my Pelacor Arbalest contributed an immense 3+3 damage.
    image.png
  • Round 2: Can you believe it? I ended Round 2 with 1 card more in my lineup. As expected, both tanks fell. As expected, my Flying Pelacor Conjurer absorbed two misses and survived by Venari Crystalsmith's healing!
    image.png
  • Round 3: My opponent was running out of cards and my 2 mana Pelacor Conjurer held firm.

  • Round 4: And just like the World Cup, the underdog team won!

Post Battle

Did my strategy work? While high level cards are important, the strategy and card selection actually are very important too! I hope this battle shows you that sometimes you don't need to buy or rent an expensive deck to play well and win matches. Take some time to get to know each card and practise, practise, and practise! If I can do it, so can you!

Do I like Gem Meteor? Hmm I don't think it's a fantastic card but the good part is it is a Neutral card so it's easy to use. But with 1 damage, only General Sloan would be a good pairing.

Final thoughts? I probably won't use Gem Meteor for a while after this! LOL! Just kidding!

So that's all I have! What are your takeaways from this battle? Feel free to comment below, as I am always keen to learn and improve!

As always, thanks for reading and have a pleasant day ahead!
