New Glint EOS Fix for Splinterlands - Ew.

Hey everybody,
So this is becoming a classic, I'm compelled to write a quick post on #inleo about some topic, I start writing, and 10 minutes later It seems obvious that I need to just Copy-Paste it and make it a Longform Post.

This evening Splinterlands was halted for a quick fix, and a few minutes later I saw this post on the X account of the Fine Gentleman @goldmatters :

I went to re-log in to the game... Ew. EW EW EW

Terrible fix in #splinterlands by @yabapmatt & co.!!

I understand that the other way to calculate end of season glint rewards was maybe too much but

  • a) You could have left it as is until the end of the season (Sorta bonus for early adopters)
  • b) current system has no sense at all, incentives wise. I'll try to break it up:

I'm Diamond II player, with 16K #sps staked. My estimation of Glint earned at the end of the season is going to be about 10K. So I have a EOS reward of 20K Glint....

That's 4 Champion boxes. Four. Four Cards (ranging from Common to Legendary and small chance of Gold) for playing 20 matches a day during 15 days.

Read the last paragraph again. 7 days ago I was opening maybe 6 boxes PER DAY , granted, not all cards, sometimes shitty rewards. But it was FUN and I shared the pulls with my friends.

FUN. I think sometimes we forget this word. I have fun playing splinterlands. But of course, as in any game a big part of the fun is to reap the rewards, be it fame, money or inside game goods that makes you win more times. Because we like to win at things, that's how us humans are coded.

Someone could say that my problem is the "low amount" of SPS staked. (Low as in boomer 1st world problem, I understand that a yankee earns $40 per hour, but most of the planet lives on like $150 per month or less)

But yeah, thanks for bring that up, let's talk about SPS. Because I think SPS is the core of the problem here.

I started with more or less 5K SPS back then. Yes, it was worth $2,500 USD back then. Today, after some thousands battles, I have worked my stash to 16K SPS. I'm pretty fond of it. Even if now is worth $280 USD...
But the problem is still the numbers. 2.8 Billion SPS. 2800 millions!

Whales with 2 million SPS or more receive MONTHLY 21,000 SPS worth today about $350. That's what they dump, month after month. So SPS price is pretty much doomed, in my opinion. It is Axie's SLP redux.

Now don't get me wrong, I don't have the magic formula to fix this. I love Splinterlands but that doesn't refrain me to see what is wrong with it at this point.

I wasn't even aware of this change. From having a game where it was possible to milk the system easily, we go to the total opposite, from one extreme to the other. I believe the solution should be somewhere in the middle...

Yeah. Later in the day the Splinterlands Team has commented on Discord that they are aware of the lack of incentives and the overall degradation of fun and logic behind tiers, so I guess that at least we have something that traditional games lack: Instant feedback and response by devs. The game is suffering a lot this last months, and pack sales , token prices and MAUs reflect that.

I'm not sure getting rid of the daily rewards chests so quickly was a good idea. It was fun opening them, going to the shop isn't the same.

Totally! They even admitted yesterday. The whole thing is that we are still "Testing in Prod" . Sometimes we forget we are little more than beyond Beta at this point. This year is going to be pretty much a make or break for the game, imho. We can be frustrated but also we should need to be constructive.
