Opening Chaos Legion Packs + Splinterland Lore Showcased

(Edited)

After getting my butt kicked in Splinterland battles over the past X amount of days I have decided it was time to call in some recruitments. Before I open these Chaos Legion packs first I need to make sure I have enough Legendary Potions (Check) and Alchemy Potions (Check). Afterwards I need to seek out the great MANA WELL which will help me summon Monsters from the Chaos Legion Tribe.

Legendary Potion: Doubles the chance of finding a Legendary Card.
Alchemy Potions: Doubles the chance of finding a Gold Card.

Pack One

While we got some interesting cards we didn't end up with anything exciting. Pack One flipped the standard four common and One Rare that is guaranteed in every pack opening. Our Potions didn't help out this time as none turned gold. However we did manage to get two one mana common cards. I'm a sucker for low mana cards so overall I'm happy with the pack opening. The rare we flipped was the Mycelic Slipspawn. It cost nine mana to play but has a massive amount of health (10).

MYCELIC SLIPSPAWN LORE:

Mycelic Slipspawn was first found on the edges of the swamps of Praetoria, in areas where the fetid waters meet with the forests and jungles. It is highly toxic and grows to a substantial size. Death is uncommon for those who touch its fibrous body however, the side effects of its toxins can cause a long list of illnesses and disease, leaving its victims severely debilitated.

When the chaos portal opened and the creeping plague infected the land, the Slipspawn struggled to endure, being completely intolerant to the deadly pandemic. But then Queen Mycelia came, she touched the Slipspawn as she passed it by and it drank from her power, an enduring energy that ran deep and defiantly cast the pestilence of the chaos taint aside. The Slipspawn pulled its roots free from the ground and eagerly danced across the leafy forest floor after her, desperate to follow its saviour and stand by her in the times to come.
The small fort was impregnable. In fact, from recollection, Ursca couldn’t remember the last time it had even been attacked, which did beg the question as to why it was there. Apparently the Realm of Silence was nearby, tunnels dug beneath the ground by rat-like creatures, but he didn’t believe any of that, it was all just an excuse to keep them penned up in the uncomfortable old garrison.

A shout snatched his attention away from the mundane task of chopping firewood and he looked up to the wall where one of the guards was waving vigorously.

“Bowmen, we need bowmen up here now!” the man cried.

Ursca forgot what he was doing, dropping the axe and running to the wall, excitement at what was on the other side dispelling any hint of alarm or panic. When he reached the palisade and looked over, he was met with the strangest of sights. It appeared the forest had sprouted legs and was shambling towards them, led by a peculiarly dressed woman and a shuffling…was that some kind of mushroom? As they neared though he could see it wasn’t a woman at all, more like some sort of infected witch, and the other thing was white and rubbery looking with fiery hair, bright eyes and a white lattice work that blossomed out behind it.

Moss and rotten spores began to appear across the wood stockade, creeping up the wall, prompting Ursca to edge away. Some of the guards fired arrows at the approaching throng but they all turned in the air at the last moment, striking the white fungus creature at the front. None of it caused any damage though and the rotting horde continued, inexplicably on. He wanted to turn and run away but his limbs felt suddenly leaden, the energy sapped from his body. Then a guard screamed and Ursca looked along the wall. He watched in horror as the fungal spores reached the poor man, quickly absorbing the life from his body and turning him into a rotting husk within seconds.

Closing his eyes, Ursca dropped to the ground and began to sob. **Lore taken from official Splinterlands site.

Pack Number Two

More of the same for pack number two. We flipped the standard four Commons and one Rare. I did manage to flip another one mana card (which is great). I also like the DeepLurker, I think the one flipped in this pack might be the first one I collected. The Rare we flipped was the Venari Spellsmith. It cost just four mana to play but has low health (2) and low attack (1). Its speed at level one (2) is decent enough for its mana cost. It also has the dispel ability at level one.

VENARI SPELLSMITH LORE

There are those who may think the Realm of Silence is a place of deep dark caverns. That could not be further from the truth. It is a region like any other in the Splinterlands that is full of homes, cities, and cultures. There are even universities that specialize in the study of magic, music, and geography. One such underground species that excels in academia are the Venari.

They created the Institute of Application that acts as a center of study for spells and tinkering. Those who wish to become fluent in spellcasting train to become Spellsmiths: masters of creating and using spells. It is through this knowledge they research and experiment with magic in order to unlock new ways to harness mana and the elemental forces.

A Venari Spellsmith is so dedicated to the art of spellcasting that magic itself became a part of them. While they themselves can manipulate magic to damage foes, magic burns through their veins. Upon death the radiating Mana explodes from their bodies, harming everyone around the Venari.
The Spellsmith set his jaw as the Minions of Chaos marched across the battlefield, laying waste to everything. The battle had taken its toll, but he and his comrades stood their ground, slinging spells at the advancing legion.

The mages of the Chaos Legion were masters of their art and weaved their magic like bards weaving a tale. They were battle-hardened, true, but they'd never faced the fury of a Spellsmith before.

The Chaos Legion's spells slammed into the front rank not thirty yards from the Spellsmith. He used his magic to reflect the damage back at the enemy, and many staggered and fell, smoldering. Next, he dispelled their protective magics, leaving them vulnerable to a counterattack.

A lighting bolt flashed from his fingertips, followed by a bolt of fire that ignited an advancing mage's robes. The man didn't slow. He raised his own hands, and deadly shards of ice flew at the Spellsmith and pierced his clothing and flesh.

The Spellsmith dropped to his knees, blood pooling around him. Now, the Chaos Legion mage stood over him, leering malevolently.

The Spellsmith smiled wearily and spread his arms, and his body erupted in a surge of arcane energy that tore through the mage's body, and he fell dead beside the fallen Spellsmith.

I tried opening a couple Chaos Legion packs a few days ago. They looked exactly like your two packs, the bare minimum. Well, I did get two Rare cards in one pack, so I guess I'm the lucky one.

I suspect the ROI of opening packs to shrink further once General sale 2.0 is in full swing. Hopefully your luck is more favorable with your next openings.

That DEEPLUKER is lovely card, one to avoid in battles if possible fast and destructive, you just won't see it coming until it leaves a destructive attack...

You weren't too lucky. I opened a package a few days ago with 3 Rare Cards and I didn't even get the investment back, we'll see over time.

Historically its been better to buy direct from market but there is 0% chance at flipping a GFL when doing so. Which keeps bringing most back to flipping packs :)

I'm so bummed that they did the lore pages on the website a bit worse quality than before.
Now the artwork shows as in a rectangle shape, but with the older lore pictures it feels like the monster itself is there. I really hope they make the new art under the lore page look alive aswell.

The new images look good but I agree the old way was better as it showed the full image of the monster.
