A time based analysis of token rewards for Posting Content versus Tweaking Splinterlands Rentals....

Given that I've been a bit short on time this week due to the Olive Harvest taking all day every day, I got to wondering what's best for me focus on when short on time....

Posting on Hive.....

Based on my last four posts, my token-rewards average around $35 a post, factoring in Hive and LEO rewards together. (Rewards are half the visible total minus around 5% to reflect the current trend on HBD floating just < $1).

A post takes me on average about an hour to research and write, so that's easy to calculate at $35 worth of token rewards an hour. These are pretty decent, reliable returns, which is why I aim to publish once every 20-22 hours, making sure there's just over one post a day over the course of a month.

Splinterlands Rentals...

With Splinterlands rentals my token-rewards are around 15000 DEC a day, or $150 a day, but this is with me tweaking the daily rentals to make sure they are competitive - lowering some of them as they come off to make sure they get re-rented promptly and reviewing daily to ensure I'm not renting too low, taking those off the rental-market and then re-renting.

Screenshot 20211117 at 08.17.14.png

This whole process takes me around 20 minutes a day - it takes a while to confirm everything in Key Chain, every single individual card!

However, given that I could probably earn $100 a day on card rentals just by setting them lower so that they would always rent out promptly, rather than manually tweaking to get the best price, I'm going to guestimate that my 20 minutes a day earns me an additional $50 a day of worth of token-rewards, so that's $150 an hour.

Analysis

Tweaking Splinterlands rentals is MUCH more lucrative than daily posting! Five times more lucrative, for me, in fact.

TBH I didn't expect the difference between the two to be so enormous, but there you go, sometimes a little bit of analysis yields surprising results!

NB those figures are mid-season averages, the EOS day it's hands-down full-on Splinterlands wins as the daily DEC rewards double for the day.

However, tweaking Splinterlands rentals is not in the slightest bit enjoyable, in fact it's a monotonous grind, BUT MUCH EASIER than working for a living (and about 50 times more lucrative than doing agricultural labour in East Central Portugal), so it's a no-brainer to keep doing this.

In comparison posting is more enjoyable because it's a creative process, but also more effort, and something I personally IDENTIFY with a lot more, and the daily post isn't something I want to quit doing.

Conclusions....

So what this tells me is that if I am short on time and it's a choice between tweaking the Splinterlands rentals and writing a post, I'll choose tweaking the rentals and publish my daily post slightly later, allowing myself to have maybe 30 hours between two posts occasionally rather than the 20-22 hour schedule I usually aim for!

NB the figures above are entirely hypothetical and your own relative token-rewards will depend on your own Hive-post rewards and your own rental returns, but I'd urge anyone to do this kind of time-earnings based analysis - the results can be VERY informative!

Good Analysis. It is impressive that the total income is almost $200/day with blogging and renting cards. Keep doing both :)

Sounds familiar here in smaller numbers but same context. Splinterwards rental and rewards is currently totally something useful (same as rising Star with a couple of clicks bit thats because I have so many cards already) to keep te focus on that and post whenever the time is really there.

Weird but true! This stuff pays the bills

Your earnings are not very typical. Some are happy to get $5 on a post, so what is their time worth? I know you have invested a lot to build up your Splinterlands deck and that is paying off. Mine is not doing too badly now. There must be a few people who can live just off the game, but can that be sustained over longer periods?

I have seen others say that the games are more lucrative than blogging, but that can be a selfish activity, unlike curating that rewards others. I think that aspect is part of what sets Hive apart from other crypto.

I have never tried to justify the time I spend here in terms of money as it would be a pitiful rate for most of the time, but it has been a lot of fun and that matters. I am not taking anything out for now anyway. Not everything can be charted on a spreadsheet :)

Yes I wonder why I'm sometimes a T20 author in terms of rewards, it's mainly being down to being well networked I think.

Mind you I don't blog just for the money at all, I enjoy just putting stuff out there, and am really happy to be here TBH!

I enjoy blogging much more than gaming, so that's what I'll keep doing, but of course there is a fusion between the two here on Hive, it's a beautiful thing!

I dunno, I think you can TRY to chart everything on a spreadsheet, everyone loves a spreadsheet!

You are probably in the top 5% of rewards at least. I will rank a little lower and I do okay. Connecting with people pays off.

The income is amazing.
Wish to be like you someday 😀

Thanks for this analysis! Even "passive income" takes work to make it happen to your best results. I've gotten into renting my cards lately and it is a monotonous chore but nice to see the DEC roll in. And nothing could be easier than hitting the CLAIM button and collecting those SPS and staking rewards daily.
I only post once a week, it's not nearly as profitable for me as it is for you so I spend a lot of time commenting and trying to build relationships to get my blog a better following. All that takes time and consistency, but I do enjoy creating posts.

It took me years to build up these kind of rewards - I think it was mainly vesting and going to the annual Fests that did it, and networking too, commenting is a big thing for sure!

I asked myself that very same question one time and like you I quickly came to the conclusion that Splinterlands rentals easily earn me more then my created content on the Hive network does. I don't adjust everyday although I do a small amount of adjustments throughout the season. Its the last day that I basically work all day listing and adjusting prices. I very passively earn roughly 5,000 DEC a day until EOS and then gold strikes. The last EOS 24 hours of rentals grossed me about 55,000 DEC.

I onced read on here a couple years back that posting content is the hardest way to grow ones account on here and I 100% agree. It took me a good year to earn 500 "HIVE". I can smash that in one day with Splinterlands earnings. Its insane to think there's still people on the Hive Network that haven't joined Splinterlands. The ROI is there danging in their face. They just need to reach out and grab it.

Damn I really underdid it with this seasons' EOS - I only managed 40K, but I was out all day harvesting Olives so couldn't optimise. It's worth being in and really focussing for just that 24 hours I agree.

TBH I think curating with HIVE might be even worse than posting!

Don't forget it's harder getting in late - easy for us as we got in on SL much earlier, but I know what you mean, swapping some Hive for DEC would be a no brainer for some of those SPS rewards at the very least!

150$ only for Splinterlands every day? Man, I envy you so much. Bought a couple of Djinn Oshannus to rent out, but your numbers are out of this world, or at least not in my reach.
