Splinterlands Challenge of the Week: Legionnaire Alvar Stands Firm!

This week's Splinterlands Challenge of the Week was to showcase the legendary neutral card: Legionnaire Alvar.

This is a very useful tank card with a combined 14 in shields and health and void shield meaning he can't be harmed by magic. However his shields are his strength as he is high in mana cost and has relatively low damage and speed at Level 1.

The battle below features a Level 1 Alvar playing a crucial role in a victory thanks to his void shields.

The Rule Set and Line Up

  • Mana cap 21
  • Standard Rules apply (Bronze League!)

Summoner - Chanseus

  1. Legionnaire Alvar - the feature card with crucial void shields
  2. Soul Fiend - 0 mana filler card
  3. Dr Blight - mainly for afflication
  4. Lensmaster - 1 mana filler card.

Did my strategy work?

Beautifully, to see it in action click here!

  • Round 1 - I lose Lensmaster to sneak, he's resurrected, I take out the Horny StoneFish.
  • Round 2 - I lose Lensmaster again, this time he's not resurrected!
  • Round 3 - I lose the SoulFiend.
  • Round 4 - Blight lands affliction and then takes out my opponent's second card.
  • Rounds 5 - 7 - we get caught in this healing loop and a miss where I can't take out the Sethropod, but no worries, Alvar is standing firm with his shields intact!
  • Round 8 - WHAT THE FUCK IS THIS 50% CHANCE OF AFFLICTION BULLSHIT. I finally land an affliction and the Sethropod goes down.
  • Round 9 - BETTER - an affliction helps take down the Pelacor quickly, but then another two rounds of 0 affliction tit for tat.
  • Round 12 - I finally get an affliction on the healer and she goes down round 13.
  • By round 15 it's all over, job done!

How important was The Legionnaire?

His Void Shields combined with repair were absolutely essential in him lasting for 15 rounds, but in order for him to have this efficacy he needed to played with Chanseus or some other card with the repair ability.

Also crucial was Dr Blight - his camouflage kept him hidden from my opponent's sneak attack which meant he was able to stay alive and land necessary afflictions on my opponent's cards, nullifying the tank healer.

All in all the combination of Chanseus, Alvar and Dr Blight was sweet!

Final Thoughts: Legionnaire Alvar worth buying?

Hmm, maybe at Level one no because I'd rather my tank have shield or void TBH, but by max level he's looking much tastier with an impressive array of abilities..... but still not my first choice for a tank!

If you don't yet play Splinterlands, why not give it a go?
