Splintlerlands BattleMage Challenge: CounterSpell!

This week's Battle Mage rule set challenge was Counter Spell in which every monster gains the reflect ability at the beginning of the battle...

Counter Spell general strategy....

As with other countering rule sets I usually find it's best to avoid playing the attack that's countered, if you can avoid it, in this case this means avoiding magic as a general rule.

You can reasonably expect your opponent to not go all out on magic too, so having monsters which work against melee and ranged attacks could be useful options!

Counter Spell battle exemplar

The battle below shows the dangers of using magic monsters in this ruleset!

Mana and rulesets:

  • Mana 36
  • Reflect,

Summoner SLM - Simply one of the best!

  • Flesh Golem - an awesome tank with self heal
  • Cornealus - self heal to go with snipe and snipe 1
  • Earth Elemental - More healing for snipe 2, and snipe attack 2
  • Goblin Chef - snipe attack three with poison
  • Mermaid Healer - for tank heal and snipe attack four.
  • Screeching Vulture - scavenge and opportunity, a decent last stand card too!

The battle...

  • round 1 - I snipe out my opponent's first ranged attack
  • round 2 - I take out my opponent's tank but lose my magical Healer, then take out his radiated brute
  • round 3 - return fire deals with my opponent's second ranged attack then I take out the parasitic growth.
  • round 4 - it's all over I'm 5 left and we pile into the Striker and it's game over!

Final battle analysis

This was useful reminder of why you shouldn't play magic with CounterSpell. The only card I lost was my one magic attack card, which died partly because of reflect!

Other than that, a solid victory based on focussing on Snipe to take out M1 while my opponent made the critical error of splitting his attacks!

Return Fire on the first ranged attack also took out one monster, which was very handy!

Counter Spell final thoughts...

Don't play magic!

Interesting how strategy develops, see how I counter your advice in my post on playing this rule set. embracing the void
