Anti-Magic Earth Strategy: Silence + Reflect Is Absolutely Lethal!

Welcome back to another Battle of The Day post!
And this time, I’ve got a story that definitely made my heartbeat rise a little. My opponent wasn’t running an ordinary team—this was a legendary Earth lineup built around brutally strong magic damage. And of course, the center of their strategy was the deadly legendary monster with the Magic + Opportunity combo: Mahkah Hemlig.

If you’ve ever faced Mahkah Hemlig in Modern, you already know the pain. This monster is a ruthless hunter: it targets the lowest HP enemy, and since it’s magic damage, armor means nothing. Forget the front tank—your supports with low HP get erased instantly.

This battle took place under the Briar Patch ruleset, with 51 mana and all elements available.
Briar Patch is notoriously unfriendly for melee attackers because every melee strike triggers thorns.

But… I still dared to bring a melee monster: Ujurak Brave.

Why?
Because Ujurak Brave has Silence. And against an Earth team that almost certainly relies on magic, Silence is an incredibly valuable asset. I knew I was risking Thorn damage, but I also knew Silence could save my entire formation.

For my tank, I chose Ulundin Overseer—thick, sturdy, and stable on the frontline.
My summoner was Archon Reklah, an insanely powerful pick thanks to its effect that reduces 2 HP from all enemy monsters, including their Taunt unit.

Behind them, I built a magic-based backline:

  • Dark Arborist – magic attacker with Magic Reflect, crucial for surviving heavy magic fire.
  • Gravebrand Warlock – a strong 3-magic damage dealer.
  • Arachne Weaver – my usual go-to healer and support.
  • Kelan Gaines – a magic attacker capable of finishing key targets.

My opponent came in with a very clean and deadly lineup.

Their summoner was the legendary Archon Akane, giving Ambush to two of their monsters. From their battle history, I already suspected they’d go heavy on magic. And I was right:

  • Gobson Sniper
  • Lord Thanalor (with Amplify that makes Thorns hurt even more)
  • Mahkah Hemlig (the main threat)
  • Ujurak Mystic
  • Silverleaf Mage
  • Virid Venomancer

This formation was clearly built to delete my support monsters in round one.

And of course… they succeeded.

As soon as round one started, the Ambush triggered.
Their target? The lowest HP monster on my team: Arachne Weaver.

One hit—instantly gone.

Losing my healer at the very start crushed my confidence for a moment. Arachne Weaver is usually one of my defensive pillars, so losing it felt like going into battle with one hand tied.

But at the same time, the effect of my summoner Archon Reklah was already working: their Taunt unit lost 2 HP and their frontliners became noticeably squishier.

Despite losing Arachne, two things gave me hope:

  1. Silence from Ujurak Brave — greatly reducing their magic damage output.
  2. Magic Reflect from Dark Arborist — constantly punishing Mahkah Hemlig every time he attacked.

And it worked beautifully. Mahkah Hemlig kept taking Reflect damage over and over. With Silence lowering his power and Reflect bouncing damage back, he became much less lethal.

Until finally…

Kelan Gaines took down Mahkah Hemlig!

This was the turning point. Once their ultimate monster fell, their entire strategy collapsed.
Gravebrand Warlock’s big magic hits started landing hard, and Ulundin Overseer held the frontline like a true fortress.

One by one, the enemy monsters fell—Lord Thanalor, Ujurak Mystic, Virid Venomancer—none of them could deliver a decisive blow.

In the end, victory was mine.

Interesting Takeaways from This Battle

Here are the key insights I noted from this match:

  • Using melee in Briar Patch is risky, but sometimes Silence is more valuable than raw damage.
  • My expected healer (Arachne Weaver) was the first one to die. That completely changed the mental flow of battle.
  • Dark Arborist’s Magic Reflect was the silent MVP. Mahkah Hemlig suffered badly from it.
  • A magic-based strategy can beat a magic-heavy enemy with the right mix of Silence and Reflect.
  • Mahkah Hemlig is a monster that must be respected—it can destroy your formation in seconds.

Conclusion & Quick Advice

This battle taught me that:

  • A lineup using Magic + Silence + Reflect is a natural counter to Earth magic teams.
  • Losing one monster early doesn’t mean the battle is over—if your core strategy is solid.
  • Mahkah Hemlig is deadly, but far from unbeatable.

If you frequently face players who rely heavily on magic, start experimenting with Silence and Reflect. Don’t be afraid to take small risks if you have a strong reason—sometimes that gamble becomes the key to winning.
