Moxian Rebel: A Fighter Who Needs Friends to Shine
![]()
Hello, splinterfam!
It feels great to be back in Battle of the Day. For today’s match, I want to share a little story about a neutral rare card that I think is extremely beginner-friendly, yet often underestimated: Moxian Rebel.

For those who aren’t too familiar yet, Moxian Rebel is a monster with the Weapon Training ability. What does that mean? It means he never fights alone. He “trains” the monster beside him so that it gains an additional attack. So this card truly comes alive when you give it the right partner.
Understanding the Strengths and Risks of Moxian Rebel
At early levels, Moxian Rebel does look fragile. He only has 1 HP, which makes him very vulnerable if the opponent brings monsters with snipe or magic-based opportunity. One hit and he’s gone. Fortunately, he comes equipped with Shield, so the first melee or ranged attack in the opening round can still be absorbed.

What makes this card even more interesting is that at level 4, Moxian Rebel gains Camouflage. This is where he transforms from a basic “trainer” into a highly valuable asset. With Camouflage, he can hide from enemy attacks while still empowering the two monsters next to him. At this point, he becomes truly troublesome for opponents.
How the Battle Unfolded: When the Opponent’s Expectations Collapse
In this battle, the active ruleset was Melee Mayhem. As we know, this ruleset usually makes players immediately think of maximizing melee attacks from multiple positions. But this is exactly where I saw an opening.
Instead of following the crowd, I decided to flip the situation with magic attacks.
I used Archon Marlai Singariel, who grants +1 magic attack. This is where the combo begins:
- Moxian Rebel as the core engine
- Ulundin Overseer
- Daigendark Surveyor
These two monsters don’t have natural magic attack. But thanks to Weapon Training from Moxian Rebel and the +1 magic buff from Marlai Singariel, they all transformed into magic warriors with 2 magic attack each.
Since the mana cap in this match was quite low, I still managed to add one more pure magic monster, Ujurak Elder.

The final result?
In a single round, I unleashed a total of 8 magic damage. A massive number for a low-mana battle.
From the first round, I could tell that my opponent was fully preparing for melee attacks. Their tank placement was solid, their formation tight, and they were clearly bracing for heavy physical hits.
The problem is… what came instead was a wave of magic.
One attack after another landed. Their healing managed to hold for the first couple of rounds, but 8 magic damage per turn was simply too much. Their HP dropped faster than they could recover.
The part that satisfied me most was seeing how Moxian Rebel, often dismissed as “just a small support unit,” became the true engine of destruction through his training effect. Without him, those two mid-line monsters would have been nothing more than fillers. But with Moxian Rebel, they became real threats.

And as you can probably guess…
After a few rounds, one by one the opponent’s monsters fell. Their defense collapsed, and victory was mine.

Closing Thoughts
Here are a few lessons that really stood out from this battle:
Moxian Rebel is not a solo card.
He’s not the lone hero, but he’s a fate-changer for the monsters beside him.Don’t always follow what the ruleset seems to suggest.
Melee Mayhem doesn’t mean you must play melee. When everyone focuses on melee, magic attacks can become a deadly secret weapon.Weapon Training is an extremely “economical” skill.
With low mana, you can turn ordinary monsters into serious offensive units. For the community, strategies like this help new players a lot.
Many beginners focus on expensive cards, when in fact combos like Moxian Rebel + non-attack monsters can create massive surprises at relatively low cost. It’s from community discussions, replays, and breakdowns like this that clever tricks often emerge.
For those of you who are new to Splinterlands, my advice is simple:
Don’t underestimate cheap support cards like Moxian Rebel. Sometimes these are exactly the cards that can drastically shift a battle — as long as you pair them correctly.
See you again in the next Battle of the Day. Hopefully, this little strategy can spark new ideas in the arena! 🔥
