The Silent Skill That Turns Tanks OP in Splinterlands

Hello Splinterlands warriors, how are you today?
Hopefully you still have enough energy to think about strategy… even though sometimes it feels like we’re the ones being “strategized against.” 😄
This time, I want to talk about a skill that might not look flashy, but its effect can make a team far stronger than it appears. That skill is Shield Ward, and the card that really made me realize its power is: Virid Venomancer.
Introduction: The Quiet Support Behind the Tank
Virid Venomancer is an Earth-element monster with a mana cost of 5. At first glance, it doesn’t seem special:
- Speed is only 2
- Relatively low health
- Not suitable as a tank
But that’s exactly where the surprise lies.

At level 3, it unlocks what I think is an incredible ability:
Shield Ward.
This skill grants Shield to the monster in front of it.
What does that mean? The monster that would normally take full damage from melee and ranged attacks… now only takes half.
After seeing its performance, I realized:
Virid Venomancer isn’t a fighter. It’s an enabler.
With a combination of:
- Shield Ward → strengthens the tank
- Magic damage (2) → can still attack through armor
- Poison → long-term threat
- Impeded (Impair-like) → slows down enemies
It becomes a “complete support” in a single slot.
Battle Moment: When the Tank Becomes Too Strong
There was one moment that really opened my eyes… unfortunately from the losing side.

In that battle, my opponent used a simple but annoying combo:
- Endless Ape in front
- Virid Venomancer behind it
And suddenly:
- Endless Ape had Shield
- Plus Scavenger
The result?

Each round, it got tankier.
Every attack I made… felt like hitting a wall that kept getting harder.
I tried everything:
- Focusing damage
- Playing for tempo
- Waiting for the right moment
But it wasn’t enough.
That’s when I realized:
sometimes the problem isn’t the front monster…
but who’s standing behind it.
Shield Ward Is Simple, Yet Effective
What makes Shield Ward so interesting is its simplicity.
It doesn’t attack directly.
It doesn’t change big numbers dramatically.
But its impact:
- Reduces enemy damage by 50% (melee & ranged)
- Keeps the tank alive longer
- Buys time for your team to operate
And in a game like Splinterlands,
time is everything.
Of course, this skill has weaknesses.
Virid Venomancer has:
- Low HP
- Vulnerability to Snipe
- Easily targeted in certain rulesets
That’s why positioning is crucial:
- Place it in the second position or behind the tank
- Or combine it with Taunt
Wrong placement?
It gets eliminated… and Shield Ward disappears with it.
Closing: Impression and Strategy
If you ask me about Virid Venomancer?
The honest answer:
not flashy… but dangerous if ignored.
Strategies you can apply:
- Use it in 20–40 mana battles (most optimal)
- Place it behind the tank or a Taunt unit
- Avoid rulesets like Equal Opportunity or Target Practice
- Maximize it in rulesets like Fog of War
And one final takeaway:
don’t just focus on attacking—learn to reinforce.
Because in Splinterlands, victory doesn’t always come from who destroys the fastest…
but from who lasts the longest.
See you in the arena. And this time, pay attention… to who’s standing behind your opponent’s tank. 😉
