When Losing Taught Me How to Play Better
![]()
Hello, Splinterlands warriors—may victory always be with you… just not when you meet me in the arena.
This time I’m joining the Weekly Splinterlands Community Engagement Challenge, and honestly, the theme made me think pretty hard. Not because it was difficult, but because I had to be honest with myself: what moment truly changed the way I play Splinterlands? And among all the battles, there’s one duel that still echoes in my head—not because I won, but because I lost in a strangely “classy” way.
Dar ‘Gottem’ Gearnut, the Living Wall
That moment came when I had to face Dar ‘Gottem’ Gearnut, a monster that is no joke. This isn’t an ordinary card—it’s a special event card, a limited type that usually appears only at certain moments and can be redeemed using special resources like Vouchers, DEC, or SPS during promotional periods.

Dar ‘Gottem’ Gearnut has absurdly thick HP, a true tank designed not to fall quickly. The consequence is obvious: a 14 mana cost—expensive, heavy, but worth it. The moment this card appeared in the arena, I knew, “Okay, this is not a casual fight.”
In Splinterlands, we never know who our opponent will be. And that’s exactly where the art lies. Every defeat brings new questions: which formation was lacking? what strategy was wrong? what can be improved?

This time, the ruleset was Earthquake—a cruel arena for monsters without Flying. That was the opening I decided to exploit.
I fielded Shadowfey Sheik, a monster with Flying and Life Leech:
Increases health and max health by 50% of damage dealt (rounded up)
On paper, it was the ideal choice. I added Chaos Jailer to apply poison, and the plan was simple: let the earthquake and poison slowly chew the enemy down.

And at the start… the plan seemed to work perfectly.
When a Strategy Is Almost Perfect—Then Collapses
One by one, the enemy’s defenses fell.
Palimpsest Prophet with Flying was taken out.
Caravan Guard with the Triage skill went down next.

Only one remained: Dar ‘Gottem’ Gearnut.
He was poisoned. Each round he took 2 damage from Earthquake and 2 damage from poison. Logically, this should have been the end.
But I forgot one crucial thing—or rather, one deadly combination:
Archon Vina of the Wolf + Dar ‘Gottem’ Gearnut.
The Heal skill from Vina of the Wolf restored all the carefully stacked damage… again and again. An extra 1/3 of max HP every round on a monster that tanky felt like ramming a wall while hoping the wall would collapse first.
Shadowfey Sheik held on for a long time. Life Leech did its job—but it still couldn’t keep up with the constant healing. In the end, defeat arrived—slowly, calmly, and eye-opening.

Reflection: A Loss That Upgraded My Mindset
That was my defining moment.
I realized that strong cards never stand alone.
Dar ‘Gottem’ Gearnut is great—but becomes terrifying when paired with the right partner. And Vina of the Wolf is an almost perfect match.

I also learned something very technical yet crucial:
If my Shadowfey Sheik had been at a higher level—with 3 or 4 damage points—the outcome could have been very different. Life Leech would have scaled faster, survivability would have increased, and slowly, Dar ‘Gottem’ Gearnut could have been brought down.
This moment changed how I play. I now value small upgrades, synergy, and reading potential enemy pairings, instead of focusing solely on individual cards.
We don’t learn only from victories, but from defeats that clearly explain why we lost.
Closing: Impressions & Strategy Going Forward
My takeaway is simple: Dar ‘Gottem’ Gearnut isn’t a monster to fear, but one to respect.
The strategic lessons from moments like this are:
- Pay attention to summoner + monster combinations, not just single cards
- Never underestimate small level upgrades
- And most importantly: losing isn’t the end—it’s valuable data for the next match
See you in the arena.
And hopefully, next time… I’ll be the one making my opponent clutch their chest.
