Building An Unexpected Ambush-Opportunist Team

Hello there! @saydie here, playing Splinterlands everyday!

The season has just ended, and the Winterfest Event has finally started, along with the beginning of the new season. Players may have been pushing their luck on getting one of the new skins, while others may still be wondering which gift boxes they should get, as well as how many they should gift to me 😆.
Well, joking aside, this week's Community Engagement Challenge was to share the process of creating your strongest, smartest, or most creative teams. While I can't say that this is my strongest or my smartest, I think that the lineup that I will share can be quite creative, as it was a build you won't expect to see that much on an Opportunity match. But first, let me share the battle rulesets that led to this lineup.

Battlefield Rulesets
For the battle that I'm about to show, there was only a 31 mana-cap, which is mostly suited for low-mid mana cards, while the only available elements were Fire, Death, and Dragon, so my card options were limited to only half of my entire deck.

As for the modifiers, this battle has 2 active modifiers.
![]()
What Doesn't Kill You is a ruleset that gives the Enrage ability on all units. With this ability, cards that receive damage will get an increase in speed and melee attack.
![]()
On the other hand, Equal Opportunity gives the Opportunity ability on all cards, allowing them to attack the monster with the lowest health.

Lineup Breakdown
After taking all the active modifiers and available elements into consideration, I decided the faster I could attack and the more damage I could inflict, the higher the chance that I would win the match, so with that in mind, I decided to go with the following lineup

Archon: Akane
With the Equal Opportunity an active modifier, going with the Archon Akane is the best option, since it could give 2 of my cards the Ambush ability that will let them to attack even before the first round starts and possibly defeat a couple of the opponent.
Card Units
![]() | For my main tank, I decided to use Halfing Refugee, which has a decent amount of health and good damage, as well as the Heal ability for only 1 mana. Not really an Opportunity material, but it will serve as a damage sponge. |
![]() | For my 2nd unit, I chose Death Ranger, to serve as my bait against Opportunity attacks, since it has low health, but it got 7 armor and the Void armor ability, so the opponent must first deplete its armor before it chips its health. |
![]() | In the 3rd position, I placed Ujurak Elder in order to boost the speed of my cards, and even though it has lower health, the opponent can't attack it due to its Camouflage. At the same time, it also boost the health of my entire team through its Strengthen. |
| In the 4th position, I placed Baron Fyatt, which migh be slow, but it has the Blind ability that gives 14% miss evasion chance against opponent attacks, and it also has the Ambush ability to allow it to attack before round 1, not to mention the Halving ability that reduces the attack of its target. | ![]() |
For the 5th unit, I used Grim Bonewhip to give another speed boost on my team and reduce the opponent's armor through Rust. Aside from that, it also has the Execute ability that will allow it to attack again if the target only has 2 or fewer health. | ![]() |
For the last unit, I used Venka the Vile as my main attacker, boasting a maximum of 7 damage with Piercing that would penetrate its extra damage to the target's health, and in case it defeats its target, its Trample ability will allow it to attack once again. | ![]() |

Battle Showcase
After getting an overview of the opponent's lineup during the Tactics stage, I decided to give the Ambush ability to Grim Bonewhip and Venka the Vile, since they both placed in a secured spot where they cannot be attacked right away, as well as they had the most damage. Along with Baron Fyatt, they will be able to attack the opponent during the Ambush round.

And during the Ambush round, my team was immediately able to defeat two of my opponents' units, particularly the Inept Healer, which is huge because the opponent loses their team healer.

Then, after round 1 ended, there were only 2 units that were left on the opponent's side; meanwhile, my team is still fully intact.

During round 2, the opponent was able to defeat some of my cards, and a couple of my attacks missed and received backfire damage, but because of that, it triggers the Enrage ability of the cards, which increases their speed and damage.

Fast forward to round 5, and we finally took down the opponent with more than half of my team still remaining.

Closing
And that was how I built an unexpected Ambush-Opportunist team with the majority of the cards being reward cards, so the opponent may not have expected what's coming for him, but that's the beauty of this game. You can play and experiment with an unusual lineup to find which team will give you victory.
Thank you, and see you on the next post!
