What Are Blockchain Games?

An example of an NFT. As you can see, the items on the list were the same but what differentiate then was their unique ID's.

Blockchain games, also known as Web3 games where not just your usual game. What makes it different was that it was integrated with blockchain technology where transactions such us buying or selling items will be paid by crypto but not only that, the assets known as NFT's (Non- fungible Token) are a kind of cryptocurrency that represents a unique digital assets which means that the items you own in the game are unique only to you and by that, what I mean is that this assets contain unique ID's that distinguishes them with one another.

What makes blockchain games different?

  • True Asset Ownership - The Items that you own on a blockchain game were unique like if you own a house in the game, though digital will count the same as your own property. As much the same, you can trade this items like a real property depending on its price appreciation which you can bought using their in- game tokens.

  • Decentralization - Players who own assets have the ability to vote on Dao's on proposals that can decide how the game will proceed. This makes the game more transparent and democratic.

Are NFTs Important?

NFT games have played a significant role in their corresponding blockchain as it can help to draw the players to onboard on Hive. I myself only was able to discover Hive because I played Splinterlands. In order to buy assets to the game you will need to buy hive and trade that to the in- game currency of the game so this also gives Hive tokens more utility aside from being the rewards we earn for making our blogs. Aside from that this games also have formed their different communities where they can create blogs and share their passion for the game.

Some Games On Hive

  • Splinterlands

image.png

Splinterlands is a fast- phased trading card game that uses NFT's to play. You choose a maximum of 7 cards and fights against the opponents under different rule sets and mana caps. They have a two-token system with their DEC (Dark Energy Crystals) for their in- game token to buy, sell, and rent cards while SPS (Splintershards) was their governance token which can be use to vote on Dao proposals and can also sometimes be used to buy promo cards and card packs. They stopped the printing of DEC and the only way to have them was to buy them through exchange like Hive engine or to win on tournaments and leaderboard but both require you to be skilled with the game.

  • Rising Star

image.png

Risingstar is a music career game that uses where items and characters are made of NFT's. You will enter music missions where it will take a certain amount of time before it can be finished and will be able to earn their token. It has a free to play feature, meaning you can start the game without buying assets. Their token includes StarBits which can be earned during missions while their Starpro (Rising Star Promoter) to buy runners that can be used to finish missions faster by paying a small fee.

  • Dcrops

image.png

Dcrops is a farming simulation game built on Hive blockchain. You have a complete control over your farm and can choose what crops to plant, all characterized as an NFT. This one has Crop (Dcrap Token) for their currency.

  • Quest For Stoken
    image.png

Quest for Stoken is a 2d platformer game which is free to play where you play as a skateboarder and defeat monsters and aliens. They have Gnars for their token which is only awarded to the player who tops the leaderboard and only has a total supply of 420 tokens but also they reward players with HBD. As for the past weeks , I have earned a 2 Gnars and a total of 2.152 HBD by placing 1st in the game. I was also played their beta test and because of that, they also reward me with a unique Nft which you can view on NFTshowroom and a POAP (Proof- Of-Actually-Playing) which you can view here.

Practical Exercise: Playing Blockhain games

  • Splinterlands

You can play Splinterlands for free but if you want to start earning their tokens, you need to purchase their spellbook which is worth 10$ then you can now buy packs or individual cards on the market but if you do not have much money to invest, they also offers card rentals. Log in using your Hive username and authorize the keychain transaction.

image.png

There are 2 types of leagues, Wild, for those who play with all types of cards series while modern for those who only have the recent card series. It is divided on 6 different tiers from Novice to Champion and you should have enough Collection Power and Rating to advanced to a higher tier. That said, an individual card is not enough to win a battle, you will be needing at least one set of card series to be able to play though if you have gold foils, it will give you 10% bonus on battle earnings.

image.png

Ratings can be increased through winning ranked battles while collection power can be earned through card. There are 4 card rarities, common, Rare, Epic and Legendary and divided into regular and gold foil. Gold foil has 10x the collection power compared to regular foil but would be as pricey as much. Collection Power also varies foe each card series.

image.png

A gold legendary card with 150,000 Collection Power

Each tier was also divided into sub- tiers and will show you a better picture of the rating and power requirements. It also shows you the type of chest you can earn as well as the maximum card level limit for each league. At Diamond and Champion, the card limit was set to maximum but you can still play using lower level cards though if you play with cards lower than the full earning requirements, your earnings will be reduced.

image.png

To view your card collection, click on View Items. There are various filters that will help you to identify your cards. Card sets, determines what card series they belong, Foils if you want to filter regular and gold foils and there is also rarity and card elements.

image.png

image.png

In order to increase the level of the card, you need to combine multiple bcx of the cards per their requirements and for the example below you need to have 400 bcx of the same cards to reach max level which will cost around 46$ at max. As this cards level up they also gain additional abilities and stats which can gain you advantage on battles.

image.png

But as I said before, if you do not have enough money to buy this expensive cards, you can just rent them. Here, I'll show you Peakmonsters which is a third- party website from the same developer as Peakd where you can buy, sell and rent cards. Splinterlands also has an in-game market but Peakmonsters has better UI and will be easier to do transactions. In order to trade, you will need to use Dark Energy Crystals or Credits which if you only just bought as spellbook, it also comes with free 3$ worth of credits so you can start renting or even buying cards with it.

image.png

Now that you have everything that you need, we can now go into ranked matches, Click on the battle and it will search for an opponent. Each match cost 1 energy which restores 1 energy per hour and you cannot play when you ran out of energy but you can also buy using DEC if you want to play more.

image.png

When an enemy was found it will also show you with the rule sets and mana caps along with the available elements which changes every time. Then you can either choose to create a team or surrender which would automatically cause you to lose the match.

image.png

When you chose to create team, if will transfer you to a different page where you can choose the cards to battle based on the limitations of the mana cap and rule set starting with the summoner and the monsters to follow next. Once done, click on the battle and will proceed to match if both players submitted their team. Not submitting a team within the time limit also causes to lose the match.

image.png

After that, you do not need to do anything else and just watch how the battle proceed or you can just skip the match as what you watch are a replay of the battle which already held on the blockchain.

image.png

As you can see, I have won the match and have earned a total of 1.715 Splintershards and aside from that, I also gained 52,185 RP which would determine the amount of daily and season chest that I earned, each can contain more SPS, Cards, and Packs.

image.png

What is shown bellow was a summary of my chest for the month of May and since we are still not done with the month, it would further increase. You can see here that I have earned a total of 407, SPS from chest and 7 packs for a total of 19.99$. I also have earned lots of cards but they are what you called Soulbound and will only have value after they are stopped from being printed so its value is not included on the total.

image.png

The SPS that I earned will be staked similar to what we have with Hive power. So far I have 2.427 SPS on this account which is approximately 53.42 $ in value. As for the card assets, I have around of 600$ of cards assets and 1 hill type land which cost at 75$ at the lowest and will be a very important aspect of their gameplay in the future.

image.png

If you want to learn more about this game, I have made lots op post about them and you can click the image that will transfer you the the peakd post.

  • Rising Star

Rising Star is a music career game where you enter different types of missions which would earn you Starbit as you finish it. In order to play, Click on Log in and enter your hive username. You can play it for free and slowly earn and use it to buy cards or just withdraw it. Since this is a music career game, different songs were also played on the background from independent artist who have make their music as an NFT.

image.png

image.png

As you can see, I'm already at level 69 as I have played the game for quite a long time now. In order to earn more, you will be relying on the tip, given to you by your fans which as a busker, you won't earn much unless you unlock more missions by acquiring more fans which you can buy along other artist. You can also earned fans through drunks but this are only temporary and when they woke up, they will forget you.

image.png

Each missions also have energy requirements. What mission I just take was the Saturday Headline which cost 100 energy which could earn me 350 to 1004 starbits and I have enough level and fans to play it. Each mission will takes different time to finish. My current mission takes 180 minutes to finish. If you have Runners, you can finish the mission quickly by paying a little amount of fee.

image.png

When you ran out of energy, you cannot play any missions at all unless you find Pizza box which your fans discarded during the missions or buy them. You can also buy Pizza which would replenish every 24 hours. Whiskey and Coffee also helps you to reduce the time to replenish your energy which restores 1 energy every 5 minutes at default.

image.png

As you progress to the game and earn more fans, your ego will increase which would reduce the amount of starbits you earn. Thats why it is necessary to acquire cards that would increase your skills, as you can see, I already have a total of 49 cards in me but my Ego was still at 30% meaning I'm losing 30% of my earnings.

image.png

You can buy packs using either Hive or Starbits but I suggest that you just convert Hive to Starbits as you can save more with it. You can also buy individual card on their market and if you will be buying, always choose the cards with more skills cause you can gain fans through drunks although temporary. Cards also have different rarities from from commons to legendary

image.png

Another way to earn is to become a music promoter and bid for missions. Bidding will require you to spent Starbits to bid and will earn you Starpro if you became the highest bidder.

Conclusion

Blockchain games are essential to Hive as they give space to the community to spent their time and could expect to be an opportunity to earn or collect assets that could grow on price appreciation in the future, things you can't have on a web2 game that maybe you have spent money to buy aside from their DLC's and item expansions which you do not can't sell most of the time. As you owned the assets you used on blockchain games, this also gives you more copyright access than your standard web2 games.
