Importance of Upgrading Your Exemplar!

Introduction

In this post I would like to talk about the importance of upgrading your Exemplar now that we have the "Rise of the Exemplars" ruleset. Not that long ago Splinterlands introduced Exemplars. At first they were not playable in any of the game formats and I have played with it and it was fun, but didn't have any practical value in the game. But recently the "Rise of the Exemplars" ruleset came out that made our Exemplars playable in Ranked and other formats.

Today I am going to talk about my Exemplar in particular why I have chosen to build it the way I am building it and what my future upgrades to my exemplar are going to be as well as share a recent Modern Format Champion level battle where it was basically won by my Exemplar.

My Exemplar

Below you can see my current Exemplar which is still a work in progress, but it is already very effective in the Rise of the Exemplars rulesets.

So why did I choose to create an exemplar with no attack? Well I believe that the most important things about cards in Splinterlands are their abilities and not the basic specs. It is the abilities that make the most valuable meta cards what they are. So with that in mind I have created my current Exemplar.

First let's talk about the basic specs. My exemplar is currently configured to be playable in formats outside the little league which has a limit of four mana. And that is actually my next upgrade for my Exemplar, I am going to us my next batch of Glint to upgrade my exemplar by reducing its mana to four points from the current six points so that is is playable in the little league ruleset as well. Even outside that ruleset having to spend less mana is very helpful.

I also focused on speed, my avatar currently has six speed which is good enough for me for now, it also has five health which is adequate for now and it has one shield in case it is hit by a melee or ranged attacker. These specs could also be upgraded in the future, but for now they are good enough for the use case.

Abilities

My Exemplar is primarily an offensive card, that is why I chose the best offensive abilities I could select.

Ambush - Takes an extra turn prior to the first round of battle. This is the most important ability as it lets me strike the opponent before they have take their first turn.

Opportunity - Targets the enemy unit with the least health. This increases the chance of taking out their glass canons prior to the start of the battle.

Blast - Deals an additional 50% damage to units adjacent to the target. This is important as it can clear our shields around the unit being attacked.

Execute - If the target has two or less health after a successful attack, perform another attack against the same unit. Another offensive ability that increases the chances of taking units off the field.

Deflect - takes zero damage from Corrosive Ward, Magic Reflect, Thorns, Return Fire and Blast splash damage. This is the only defensive ability, but it is really important as I intend to attack with all three attack types once my Exemplar is Weapons Trained.

Coyotelation has fielded a very good team featuring one of the most Meta summoners Dragonlord Mancer as well as a great team of monsters including his own Exemplar, however they were not prepared for what was about to hit them...

In the Ambush round their unit was able to counter attack using his spite ability, however that unit was the last one to be able to do any damage to my Exemplar.

By the time round two came about my Exemplar took off half of their team off the field!

And at the start of the second round my Exemplar took down the rest of the team lead by Dragonlord Mancer. Just like that with no losses on our side at all...
