Modern Big Mana Battles are Lots of Fun!

Introduction

I used a classic Splinterlands Share Your Battle challenge image for this post, because I think it is kind of fun and nostalgic. Also, I am sharing a battle here so it kind of fits.

But I am not going to be using Legionnaire Alvar in this battle, as I am sharing a modern battle and he is long out of Modern League. Instead I am going to share a high mana battle with some of my favorite modern monsters.

The Ruleset

One of the most important things to consider in your Splinterlands battles is obviously the ruleset. In this case we have a relatively high mana battle where you can use sixty points to build your team. In the olden days this would be a really high mana battle as you would not be able to go higher than sixty, but these days the real unlimited mana battle is where 99 points are available as a lot of really high mana monsters were introduced after Chaos Legion set.

In this battle we have Up to Eleven, Lost Magic and Noxious Fumes rulesets in effect. When I see Noxious Fumes rulesets, I like playing monsters with Immunity ability such as Mad Ogre Anarchist as I am playing here as well as the monsters that have an Ambush ability as you get to hit one more time before the battle even starts and before the poison starts eating at you monster's health.

My Rush Townsend is not even maxed out for the Modern Diamond level and it is still one of my favorite cards to play in this ruleset and in general. Another key card here is Oridum Graybrow. This legendary card has Spite ability where it has a 100% chance to counter attack when defeated. It also has Resurgence ability where it self-resurrects with 100% armor and health which would bring it back with no poison.

Oridum Graybrow is a very strong card and I like playing it when the fire splinter or dragon splinter are available.

The Strategy

Since we have Noxious Fumes in effect I decided to go for the offensive high damage strategy that utilizes Nidhoggr as my summoner. This summoner reduces opponent's health by one point as well as remove their armor and it gives three of my monsters Blast ability.

That sounds like a perfect recipe for the current ruleset.

Additionally my strategy here is to split a potentially focused fire from my opponent by using a high health taunt monster. Here I am using Syrenth legendary reward card that comes with a base health of ten and one shield as well as four ranged damage as well as Taunt, Dodge, Return Fire and Stun abilities.

I figure since magic is not available my opponent is likely going to be using at least some ranged attackers and return fire would reduce their shield or even tap into their health.

And finally what offensive blast strategy is complete without Venka the Vile?! Yes this is a relatively low mana monster with no immunity, but her seven melee damage combined with Charge and Trample abilities makes playing her here definitely worth it.

The Battle

Link to the Battle

As we see here my opponent chose to go with a Commander Slade upfront, that is actually a dangerous move for my high damage strategy that is focused on the front monster as there are likely to be many misses and that is a potential way to loose this battle.

The miss scenario did play out as expected, my Rush Townsend missed both of his attacks despite being the fastest monster on my team. A few other monsters also missed and got backfire damage. At least Venka didn't miss, but at the start of the second round we are in a precarious position with poison set to take out my tank and my taunt monster as soon as round two starts:

Round two started with both monsters dead and Venka really proving her worth as she took out their tank and a second monster behind it. Oridum Graybrow also did well by taking out their Venka and self-resurrecting with full health and no poison affliction.

Round three starts with a clear advantage for our team. And Venka with just one point in remaining health proves its worth once again by taking out both of the remaining enemy monsters!

And it is a sweet victory in a fun and exciting battle with almost seventeen SPS as my reward:

The low mana battles are killing me right now because I have so few cards and nothing below a 4 mana yet. I can usually hold my own in the higher mana battles. Anything around 24 is a crap shoot.

If you are playing Frontier, I don't think there is anything below 4 mana...
