Revisiting The New Player Experience In Splinterlands
Introduction
Recently, I got a free spellbook from Wasder which is a social app for gamers. Anyways I decided to make a new account and see what the new experience was like. I will not share the account name as I just want to explore and see things with this account. This post will be sharing my findings and thoughts.
Account Creation / Hive Wallet
Ok I found the account creation to be pretty standard for any game. We create an account with an email and create a password. That's basic and pretty hard to mess up for any game. However, when it comes to the web3 side of things with the hive wallet, I think new people that aren't familiar with crypto would find a hard time understanding especially since we are given like three different keys and a master password.
There isn't really much of a guide on Splinterlands website for all this and that new player would have to search and find it from google or YouTube probably to figure out everything with the Hive stuff.
Battles As A New Player
Novice was pretty easy as the Splinterland bots weren't too difficult to beat. There's no bonus rating but you also don't lose rating. You would need to win 10 matches to finally reach bronze since it's +10 rating per win and bronze is at 100 rating. This is a lot better than before when I first started playing and can help new players understand the game from losing. It also gives a better chance to win so new players won't be too disappointed after getting crushed repeatedly by strong bot lineups which happened in the past. I did rent cards so I'm not 100% sure if this is accurate as I did use llama kron for some of the battles.
I think bronze was tough though. As mentioned before, I rented cards and I thought I would be able to steam roll with llama kron and yodin but boy I was wrong. These bots are playing super strong line ups. I noticed they love to use martyr ability. The way they use martyr ability is disgusting; I have shown some examples below of their lineups with martyr. The bots now have super solid line up using only soulbound reward cards, starter cards and maybe some few rented cards.
Conclusion
In conclusion, I think the new player experience is still far from being great. The changes to novice did help a bit but that was more like a band-aid. I think it has just pushed the problem to bronze. Honestly, I did not enjoy playing in bronze since these bots were playing crazy insane lineups that were just super strong. I don't think I'm a great player but I don't think I'm a bad player either. I would say I'm better than average and I usually wouldn't find it so difficult to win battles especially since this is just bronze!
If I was frustrated playing in bronze, I don't see how a new player could hope to play and enjoy the game but who knows I could be wrong. This is probably why our player base hasn't grown much as the new player isn't able to have a simple and easy experience. Before investing, this is just a game and I think we are still lacking from basic things for new players to start playing this game. I still don't understand why Splinterlands hasn't focused on developing a better mobile app. I hope they can take a look at what Cross The Ages has been doing as they have been very successful in terms of marketing and reaching out as well as not turning a blind eye to all the possible increased amount of players from having a good mobile app. These are just my thoughts. Anyways that's all for me!
