Thoughts On New Market Listing Fee & Expiration On Splinterlands

Introduction

As of the most recent tech update this week, they have added a listing fee of 1 dec for for any cards you want to rent out and this includes updating the price. In addition to that, if the card is not rented within 30 days, the card will be expired and taken off the rental market. This is a pretty big change and I want to cover my thoughts and implications of this change.

Why Was This Implemented

I think the main reason this listing fee and expiration was implemented was because of the amount of redundant transactions going through the blockchain which led to delays in the blockchain. There were just too many level 1 cards being listed for 0.1 dec. Most of these weren't being rented out anyways or bot farms would take them up to play. So now that we know the reason why it's implemented, we can move on to the implications.

What Are The Implications

We've had a few days to see what would happen after the update. To my expectation, there are still blockchain delays. This listing fee & expiration seems to be more like a band aid for the issue. It maybe helped a bit but it doesn't seem to have made as big of an impact as many thought it would. Maybe it's still too early to tell but at least there will be a lot of less clutter of lvl 1 common cards that weren't being rented out.

This also has made an impact on those genuinely renting good leveled cards. Even though it's only 1 dec it adds up if you have many cards you are renting out. Personally, I use SPLEX to rent out my cards as I don't have the time to manually adjust my price and manage all my cards to rent. I'm not sure how many times SPLEX reprices the cards but in any case that 1 dec is going to add up. For those that don't know SPLEX is a service that automates your rentals for you. If the card owners aren't absorbing the cost, the renters will be as the card owners will raise the prices for the cards to rent. I feel that card rentals have increased a lot since this update and I wonder if anybody else is feeling it as well.

With these rental cards spiking, there has also been a lack of supply of certain cards that are really good. I couldn't even find a Kelya Lvl 4 to rent recently and if there was one available it would be 200dec+. From what I can see, once land comes out we are really going to have a shortage of cards and there's a chance that cards prices and rental prices might hit new highs. I hope that this will encourage people to combine their cards. I still feel like there are a lot of 1bcx cards out there. I feel there's just not much of an incentive to own and combine cards or rent higher level cards even with the level penalties for using under level cards.
