You Can Fly Or You Can Die

Introduction

It's finally the last Monday of February. Two months just went by super fast. I'm also excited for the end of season and ranked up date in three days! Anyways for Battle Mage Secrets last week, I shared about my strategy and tips for the counterspell ruleset. This week I will be sharing my strategy and tips for Earthquake which is the theme for this week. For this ruleset, units without flying take 2 damage. If a unit is snared it won't count as flying and another special thing is units with shield can halve the earthquake to 1 damage.

My Strategy & Tips for Earthquake

The main strategy in Earthquake is to prioritize strong units with flying. Some notable ones include Chaos Dragon, Pelacor Conjurer, Pelacor Mercenary, Pelacor Bandit, Regal Peryton, Uriel, Adelade etc. Personally, I like to go for water, dragon, life or earth element in this ruleset. I find them to be the best in Earthquake. In this ruleset, I like using Immortalis with Pelacor Mercenary and Regal Peryton with the Mycelic Slipspawn and the two martyr soulbounds to buff my two flying units. For Kelya, sometimes you can just break through with only a pelacor bandit but you have the Merdhampir to snare. Life can also be strong here with Uriel, Adelade, War Pegasus combo along with Iziar to buff.

Some other strategies involve adding armor to tank like Queen Mycelia and Arkemis the Bear. There's actually a summoner that gives all units flying but it's not in modern anymore. It's good for wild and brawls if available especially in low leagues like bronze.

The Battle

The battle link can be found here. This battle was on my scholar account, Bltzr-wizard-727. This battle was in a tournament. It's actually a gold foil diamond tournament so I just had to play the best I could with what I had. It was a 99 mana battle with Melee Mayhem, Earthquake and Rise of The Commons ruleset. Only the water element was available.

I'm actually doing super well in this tourney. There's about two hours left for this torunament. I hope I'm able to hold my position because it would be a nice juicy 2000 sps! This is probably one my best performances in a modern wealthy gambit tournament.

Discussing My Lineup

Summoner , Kelya - I chose Kelya because it was my only choice as a Summoner. I didn't have a Jacek gold foil max or the rebellion summoners.

First Position, Arkemis The Bear - For a 99 mana battle with rise of the commons, it's a must to have Arkemis The Bear as the first position unit. There's no better tank in these circumstances

Second Position, Flying Squid - Flying Squid was my unit with reach. It has nice bulk with 10 health so it can last long in the fight even though it's taking 2 damage from earthquake each round. The blind also plays a huge role which you will see if you watch the battle.

Third Position, Gargoya Lion - Gargoya Lion is my unit with flying. It's able to be in this position since there is a melee mayhem ruleset.

Fourth Position, Venari Marksrat - Venari Marksrat was my fodder. It's main purpose was to attract opportunity units and basically die to buff my two flying units.

Fifth Position, Pelacor Bandit - The main purpose of this unit was to survive with flying and do some dps to the backline.

Sixth Position, Deeplurker - This unit was my assassin. It was also left in the last position to make sure my Pelacor Bandit wouldn't lose any armor or health from sneak units.

Analysis of The Battle

This was a super close battle believe it or not. I actually thought I was going to lose but you know sometimes it's not about using the higher mana units. Even with 99 mana as the cap, you can see the mana of my units was towards the low end but I chose some units with flying. My opponent seemed to opt out of that and they actually lost due to the earthquake damage. I'm actually quite proud I pulled off this win since my card pool was super limited. I don't really think there was anything I would've changed with my team.

Do I Like Earthquake ruleset?

I do enjoy playing this ruleset. It's kind of fun to just fit in some flying units to gain an advantage. I think this ruleset actually gives cards like Gargoya Lion a chance to shine! Personally, this is the only ruleset where I woulud ever consider playing Gargoya Lion.
