Welcome Splinters!

In today's post, I would like to share with you my first fight against a RUNI and hopefully my first win as well.

It was something very curious, after all I had never bumped into one of these unique creatures.

So no outlandish strategies or plays beyond human understanding, I just want to share this very unusual and fun moment for me.

What is a RUNI?

First, explaining what a RUNI is, we can say that they are NFTs created on the Ethereum network, but that when linked to your Splinterlands account, they become a maximum level neutral legendary unit that you can use on the battlefield.

image.png
Origin

The sale of these NFTs was made by OpenSea and the project's home page can be seen at this address: https://opensea.io/collection/runi/drop.

Researching a little about its price, on the day the sale started, its price was 0.38 ETH plus existing fees, which would be about $575 for each RUNI.

A very salty value for me, as an investor, and a very humble HIVER, let's say 😄.

Some examples of the appearance of the NFT after its creation, remembering that they are all generated with completely random combinations, so when created you will always have a big surprise as to what can happen:

image.png
Origin

A feature about its creation is that there are more than 2 billion possible combinations and each one of them is unique, that is, there is no way to have two units exactly alike.

Another feature is that by linking your ETH account with your Splinterlands account, you will be able to use your RUNI in battles. If you manage to summon legendary cards at their maximum level, our little friend will have 4 abilities:

  • OPPORTUNITY: Focus attacks on opponents with lower health.
  • REBIRTH: A new skill created especially for RUNIs, when defeated, once per match, he will be resurrected with 1 life point.
  • TRUE STRIKE: Makes you always hit your attacks, that is, never misses.
  • REFLECTION SHIELD: Prevents damage from BLAST, THORNS, RETURN FIRE and MAGIC REFLECT.

About this new ability, there is a section explaining about it on the OpenSea page:

image.png
Origin

I did a quick search, but I couldn't find if this ability will be exclusive to RUNIs "forever", or if we might see it in other Splinterlands cards, in a future expansion for example, if anyone can confirm this, please leave it in the comments!

Closing this topic, the creation period has already come to an end with 54.2% of the 6500 RUNIs created:

Battle

Now that we understand a little better what a RUNI is, let's go to battle!

Starting with the rules, we can see below, allowing ranged units to attack in the first position and only cards with even cost can be selected:

image.png

Available mana was 14 points and fire, earth, life, death and dragon elements enabled for our choice. Many options could be created, but with a huge choice limit.

Due to this very low limit, I immediately imagined selecting the death element due to removing 1 life point, to be an answer if the earth element was selected and also thinking about CURSED WINDEKU, which would be a great option option.

So, to speed things up, my team and my opponent's team was as follows:

image.png

  • CURSED WINDEKU: As a tank and taking advantage of its ability, THORNS, with the -1 health of the summoner, could be a good one to defeat attackers with the melee attack.
  • UNDEAD BADGER: Because I have the SNEAK skill and focus on my opponent's last monster, I thought of somehow already removing armor or inflicting some damage that could help later.
  • XENITH ARCHER: To close the available mana and also because it is a ranged attack and with 3 life, it could somehow hold some attacks.

I confess that I got scared when I saw a RUNI on the opposing team, because this was the first time I faced one. I believe my opponent built the team geared more towards being an answer against the earth element and its magical attacks.

Round 1

As I already showed the way the teams turned out, I put here the important point of round 1, the RUNI, hitting my weakest monster, due to its OPPORUNITY ability and with the TRUE STRIKE he always hits.

The possibilities with this unit are countless from the REVERSE SPEED rule, the bonus you get from TARSA, the speed and defense of KELYA FRENDUL, among others.

monstro_png.png

So when you have a card that hunts yours with the lowest health and still always hits, it becomes monstrous if you manage to put together a strategy that guarantees its survival.

Round 2

As I said, I believe that my opponent was more prepared to hold magic damage, because from the second round, we can see that the battle would not be so difficult, after all, CURSED WINDEKU was a perfect choice for this situation.

image.png

An interesting point is that the opposing RUNI was not at its maximum level, it was limited to level 2, thus, it did not have the skill REFLECTION SHIELD, which would nullify the damage return of THORNS.

I believe that if he had been at his maximum level, he could have brought big problems to my team.

Round 3

So taking return damage from THORNS made things a lot easier. This turn, CURSED WINDEKU finished the RUNI that, taking advantage of its REBIRTH ability, came back with 1 life and 2 defense.

image.png

Upon returning, my XENITH ARCHER hit your attack and removed 1 defense.

Round 4

Finally, WINDEKU attacked and XENITH ARCHER finished it off, as he had already used his REBIRTH ability once, this time he went to the ditch of no return.

You can check out all the details by watching the replay HERE.

Finishing

Imagining that your opponent will use a card worth $575, we soon thought, there's no way to win with that, right? Anyway, the strategy is amazing for that and it's what makes Splinterlands in my opinion such a pleasure.

The weak who can beat the strong, not by their muscles, but by their intellect when putting together a strategy or thinking in advance what their opponent will choose, this point is something that has always caught my attention.

That is all! Thank you all and until the next post!

Bem-Vindos Splinters!

Rodada 3

It has been a demonstration that the strength of the game is not in expensive cards, but in playing with strategy. Expensive cards can give you an advantage, but it's skill that will win you out in the end. Very well played.
