Splinterlands - Battle Library 25 - Placement is Crucial and sometimes 0 mana cards don't help!

It's been a while since I've done one of these but I had an interesting Brawl Battle I thought I'd present.

This time an opponent looked to have an advantage but sometimes you've got to look a little closer.

First things first, feel free to just go to their website directly but if Splinterlands interests you I'd be very happy if you joined up with my referral link:

Placement can be critical, whether its to target heals, split damage or protect the right cards. Zero Mana cards can also be the difference between a win and a loss - placement being key. Unfortunately in Brawls, that one hit they take can make a big difference - for the opponent if bloodlust is involved.

Let's look at an example:

The rules that applied to this battle were:

  • Mana cap of 25 - Not a huge cap but does allow for some large cards.

  • Fire, Water, Earth or Life Splinters;

  • Equal Opportunity - all cards have the opportunity ability

  • Reverse Speed - slower is better!

Because of the Reverse Speed and Equal Opportunity rulesets I thought this was a good chance to use Grum and Chimney Wallstop - both quite powerful melee cards that work well with Tarsa.

And so I went with:

Summoner - Tarsa (4) - For the melee damage buff of course!

Grum (11) - powerful melee, with one speed is great for reverse speed games, void armor to slow magic attacks and of course BLOODLUST! Also has quite high health on top of all that;

Chimney Wallstop (10) - another powerful melee card, two speed so not bad in the ruleset and of course BLOODLUST and a high health pool too. Playing him in Second Spot is usually the plan due to Reach but in this case I'm aiming to split damage just a bit more by using him as a soak as he is slightly weaker than Grum so should split damage away from Grum.

This used all the cap in just two powerful cards but if the opponent used a number of small cards I was hoping to get some Bloodlust triggers and if they used just a few big cards like me, Grum and Chimney should hold their own.

My opponent went with a similar plan!

Summoner - Tarsa (4) - see above;

Scorch Fiend (0) - aiming to soak a shot or maybe even a miss.

Grum (11) - see above;

Chimney Wallstop (10) - see above;

A very similar lineup, a gold foil Chimney gives him an advantage in power and on top of that a Scorch Fiend to soak up a shot. Three on Two - seems like he has the edge. But lets just look a little closer - My plan to take out small cards with powerful ones to trigger bloodlust might just pay-off since the Fiend will go down fast. No other small-fry to capitalise on but lets see how it plays out. His placement is also different with the Chimney in front of Grum.

Turn One - His Grum goes first hitting my Chimney who, as planned soaks up the shot (just armor too!) thanks to the opportunity ruleset. My Grum goes next taking out the fiend quickly and triggering Bloodlust to beef him up! Nice!. His Chimney goes next hitting his to take out the armor and then his Chimney hits my Grum (but only the armor). This leaves turn two to look as follows:

My Grum now has six attack and twelve life and Chimney also practically matches his gold foil one so its going to be close.

Turn Two - His Grum goes first hitting my Chimney - splitting the damage again - nice!. My Grum goes next reducing his Chimney to just four life. My Chimney goes next killing his and triggering bloodlust leaving turn three to start as follows:

The match is practically all over now as it's two on one. His Grum has an armor advantage but will take at least three shots to get through my Bloodlust enhanced Grum. Meanwhile Chimney will be devastating with it having seven damage!

Turn Three - His Grum takes two shots, My Grum takes one. His Grum can only take one more shot as shown in the screen below for turn four.

Turn Four - My Chimney goes first and that's the end of the battle. Nice!

So what was key here? The most crucial was placement, He put his Chimney in front of Grum. I did the opposite so I benefited from some damage splitting. Secondly he tried to soak a shot with a fiend - bad idea as it meant I got early Bloodlust which added to my powerful from the start - I'll take that!

Anyway, hope you enjoyed the battle and if you're interested at all take a look at the other things I dabble in with the links below.
