Sometimes it's the humblest of cards that make all the difference.

First things first, feel free to just go to their website directly but if Splinterlands interests you I'd be very happy if you joined up with my referral link:

In Battle Library Thirteen we look at a battle where the humble Earth Elemental makes all the difference. A common card with no ability of its own (at level one at least) and only a single ranged attack it's only advantage might be the six life it has - Well no matter its stats, this battle shows that even the humble earth elemental could be the difference between winning and losing!

The rules that applied to this battle were:

  • Mana cap of 18 - A low cap so hard to fit in any big cards

  • Fire, Water, Earth and Life splinters only;

  • Fog of War - no sneak or snipe abilities

With no sneak or snipe abilities and a low mana cap the strategies can be difficult to decide upon. My opposition had used Alric and water a lot so I wanted a team that could negate magic a bit and since I was on an Earth daily quest I went with the following:

Battle library 13 2021 11 28.png

Summoner - Mylor (3) - For the thorns ability;

Unicorn mustang (8) - For the attack and void ability to negate magic attacks;

Earth Elemental (3) - decent life at low mana cost;

Wood Nymph (4) - For the healing;

I couldn't fit much in to this cap with 11 mana used up just from the summoner and the Mustang! I went with the Earth Elemental for his six life and between the Elemental and the Mustang, with the wood nymph heals might outlast the teams I faced.

Surprisingly the opposition went with a Mylor team as well and not the expected Water team:

Summoner - Mylor (3) - For the thorns ability;

Unicorn mustang (8) - For the attack and void ability to negate magic attacks;

Furious Chicken (0) - to absorb an attack

Child of the forest (2) - for a ranged attack and speed of five!

Wood Nymph (4) - For the healing;

This team only used 17 of the possible 18 but still had one more card than my team thanks to the 0 cost furious chicken. It was a strange choice using the Child of the Forest as its ability, snipe, was out due to the rules but that would work to my advantage!

And away we go:

Turn One - The Child of the forest goes first, then the Mustangs trade hits and thorns! The Wood Nymphs trade heals on the Mustangs and then the Earth Elemental hits the opposition Mustang. The turn ends with both Mustangs on seven - even stevens after round one!

Turn Two - A carbon copy of turn one with both Mustangs ending turn two on four life.

Turn Three - The Child of the forest goes first, then the Mustangs trade hits and thorns and kill each other! My wood nymph kills the chicken, their wood nymph hits the elemental. Child of the forest with two life is now his tank and Earth Elemental my tank with five life.

Turn Four - The child of the forest and the earth elemental both cannot attack. At this point I cant lose even with really bad RNG. The fact that the earth elemental can withstand five shots from his wood nymph means even if he gets back to back hits (going last one turn and first next turn) the Earth Elemental will not die - the same cant be said for the Child of the forest. Similarly once the Child of the Forest dies, even if the RNG gods meant his nymph would heal every time before the death blow fatigue would get it in the end! So to sum up, in turn four/five Child of the forest dies and in turn 13/14 the wood nymph dies! Battle won!

And so the humble earth elemental carried the day thanks to its high life for low mana cost! A card that could be more useful than at first glance!
