WOO - My Take on WWE's RAW and Vince Russo's Critique
Hi guys, it's @skyehi and this is Wrestling Organization Online, WOO.
RAW this week had me thinking about WWE superstars of today and how they stack up against legends such as Randy Savage.
During the gauntlet match, I watched as Sami Zayn won and earned an opportunity for Gunther’s Intercontinental Championship. Some fans were jubilant over Zayn’s triumph, Vince Russo was however not among them.
He talked about how Zayn couldn’t keep up with his last year’s trend which inspired us to always love him the same way some like Randy Savage have been able to maintain their level of popularity.
Listening to Russo made me consider where WWE stands at present. It is true that there are many skilled wrestlers out there but does their relationship with the viewers come close to what people like Savage had?
Russo apparently doesn’t think so, and it is clear why.
The development of character in wrestling is very important and it appears to me that there are some modern-day wrestlers who have not sufficiently developed their personalities.
They may be great athletes, but without an interesting personae, fans can’t really attach themselves to them.
When Russo said this about not making Savage compete in matches where the audience doesn’t care, it made me realize how significant having a character that resonates with the people is.
As impressive as Sami Zayn’s journey from last year’s Tag Team title win to now challenging for the Intercontinental Championship is, has his character changed enough to keep fans interested?
That is a question one must ask oneself. In today’s WWE, it often feels like superstars are at the mercy of the booking, rather than being able to carve out their own path like what past legends did.
As a fan, I wish to see contemporary WWE stars rise to the same popularity and longitivity as legends like Randy Savage. However, it will take more than that in order for them to do so.
They need interesting characters, interesting storylines, and the ability to engage with the audience on a deeper level.
Finally whether Gunther’s reign as Intercontinental Champion continues or comes crashing down by Sami Zayn is another reminder of how things keep changing in WWE.
Nevertheless, while there are fans who have such deep love like mine then there is hope that future superstars will step up and make memories that will stand out for ages.
