Aurelia Hiding Chibi Emote

It's been a while since I last did a drawing and I feel like I had significantly improved. I kept practicing on my own and I feel like this is one I can be most proud of.

I really like the concept of Aurelia but I want to make it cuter instead of the serious look. So, I tried doing it with my own chibi style and I am really happy of the result.

Drawing Process

Lineart:

First and foremost, I started with the lineart. Since this wasn't supposed to be an official entry and something I did on a whim, I skipped the guides portion.

Even though I didn't add any guide, you can still see the minor changes I added like creating pointy lines on whenever I think is good and adjusting some of the parts.

For the guides, I usually don't do the guides and I just do them in my posts to make it easier for others to follow.

Base Color:

Once we've got the lineart down, it's time to color it. Start with the base color for each part and fill everything that is required. I filled past the wall but I would do something towards the end that would make sense.

I used Aurelia's original art in order to get the colors. This is in order to make it as close to the main art as possible. I did change the skin tone though because I thought the main art's skin tone looked too dark or brown and I want mine lighter. Dark skin toned with a dark green hair and dark brown clothes would result to a very dark overall color palette which, personally, doesn't look appealing to me.

Changing the skin tone to a lighter one created a contrast which highlighted the darker colors of the hair, eyes and clothes more increasing the overall feel of the art.

Adding Details:

Next comes the shadows and highlights. I don't have to add anything extra here so just shadows and highlights would be fine. I really like Krita's sliders as it makes good and complementing highlights and shadows. It's easy to use and always available there on the upper right, below your color picker.

Wall Details:

Lastly is the wall. It is a combination of all steps but just for the wall. There's shadows and highlights mixed in although some of the highlight is more profound than others. I was thinking of making a mix of different shades for the shadow at first but it wasn't good so I stayed with what looks better.

I also reworked the hands, both the lineart and the colors in order to put it above the wall layer making it look like Aurelia is peeking from the wall. In other words, I remade the hands to introduce a layering effect to make it hand > wall > body. This made the wall more 3d-esque instead of looking like a backdrop in color of a wall.

Final Words

After finishing everything, I kind of sat back and realized how fun this whole drawing was to make. It wasn’t even planned and still ended up becoming one of my favorites so far. I really enjoyed the moments like this because they reminded me that improvement doesn’t always come from strict routines or continuous practice. Sometimes, luck plays a huge part. You just pick a character that looks good, draw something inspired by it and suddenly you’re making your next masterpiece. Even the parts I thought I messed up in the beginning, like the wall or the hands, ended up teaching me one or two small tricks that I can use next time.

Overall, this little Aurelia chibi project reminded me that art doesn’t have to be perfect to feel rewarding. Every new piece adds a bit of confidence and helps you understand your own style more even when you’re just drawing on your own.

I think I’ll keep drawing chibi arts and emotes since it feels natural and fun for me and maybe try more Splinterlands characters in this style too. If I made something good again like this one, I'll be sure to show it in my next post and hopefully, others would find my art good as well.
